Your entire plumbing system depends on the water to flow at just the right pressure throughout the day. If the water pressure is too high or too low, it can damage your plumbing system, including the septic tank, sump pump, pipes, and fixtures.
A fast drop in only one faucet means there's a problem with the faucet. Rapid low pressure affecting one area of the house may mean a corroded pipe issue. An abrupt water pressure drop affecting the whole house may mean a water main break (municipal water) or a well pump problem (well water).
If you're suddenly getting low water pressure in one area of the house… ...the supply pipes to that area may either be corroded, leaking or blocked. If all the fixtures in an entire bathroom or the entire kitchen are suddenly getting low water pressure, you can trace the issue to the plumbing pipes.
Over time, high water pressure wears on your plumbing system and leads to: Leaking Pipes: High water pressure continuously puts too much force on your pipes. Eventually, your home's pipes will likely wear down until they can no longer hold back the water.
Low water pressure often means water lying in your pipes as the pressure can't force it through. And unfortunately, when this happens, rust can occur. Corrosion is also a common factor in older pipes. Over time, the metal reacts with the water to cause a build-up of rust deposits.
For instance, it can damage appliances like the dishwasher and the water heater. This is because these appliances require specific water pressure to work effectively. If they are continuously operating with low water pressure, they may get damaged, and you may even have to replace them.
Normal psi for a home pipe system is between 30 and 80 psi. While you don't want the psi to be too low, it violates code to be above 80. Instead, you should aim for a psi that's between 60 and 70.
Water Sounds—When pipe damage lets air in, your water may make gurgling or bubbling noises. Unusual Colors—Brownish water coloring is often a sign that your pipe is corroded and damaged. Foul Smells—Sewage-like smells coming from your faucet, showers, or sinks often indicate an issue with your water mainline.
After a while, the intense pressure bursts open your pipes from which water can leak out. Typically, a destructive force ranging between 25,000–114,000 PSI can easily make your water pipes expand and rapture. Because of the damage from frozen pipes, your plumber may suggest that you have all your faucets put on a drip.
If the municipal water or well-water flow is the problem, hire a licensed plumbing contractor to install a water-pressure booster pump. These powerful, electric pumps target incoming pressure and raise it to the proper level.

Watch the Water Meter
Turn off all water faucets in your home and make sure the washing machine and dishwasher are not running. Check the water meter and make a note of the numbers you see. Come back in an hour and check again. If the numbers have changed, there's a leak somewhere.
Excessive water pressure can cause stress on your plumbing leading to leaks and burst pipes. If you hear banging from your pipes (known as a water hammer) this is a sure sign of high water pressure. It may mean that the water pressure from your supplier to your house is too high.
It may be caused by debris such as dirt, sand, solidified oil and grease, food particles, or foreign objects. Pollutants can block pipes if they back up due to fractures in the water main. Mineral buildup clogs pipes over time and causes the water pressure to go down, as there's less space for water to travel through.
The good news is that you can easily replace faucet aerators, clean showerheads to remove limescale, or simply buy new fixtures to replace the defective ones, which can improve your water pressure. However, it is important to know that repairing or replacing faucets and fixtures is only a temporary solution.
Pipes are most likely to burst when exposed to below-freezing conditions for six hours or more, which can happen throughout winter and early spring.
Bursting of water pipes is one of the common plumbing issues that homeowners have to contend with. Whether in the house's plumbing network or the supply pipes, water pipes can burst without warning, leading to a major repair that requires the attention of a qualified plumber.
Water sounds in the walls are another sign. If you hear a constant drip, but know all of your faucets are aren't the cause, a pipe inside the wall is a likely cause for the noise. Additionally, check your other water fixtures before you assume a burst. Toilets, sinks, or tubs also make water noises from time to time.
Homeowners insurance generally covers damage due to broken pipes if their collapse is sudden and unforeseen. Water damage that occurs gradually due to a leaky or rusty pipe, however, is generally not covered.

Regardless of the material, each of these plumbing products have a life span that you should know so you can gauge whether you need an upgrade. Brass, cast iron, and galvanized steel have a life span of 80 to 100 years, copper lasts 70 to 80 years, and PVC piping only survives for 24 to 50 years.
Burst Pipes Aren't Always Easy to Detect
In fact, it's possible to have a ruptured pipe go unnoticed on your property for quite some time. Depending upon the location of the pipe and the magnitude of damage it's sustained, it may leak water for weeks on end before you even notice it.
Typical home water pressure should be between 40 and 50 psi, so if the dial reads less than 40 psi, you have low water pressure.
Allison Strube, director of water utility for San Angelo, Texas, explained if the pressure in the system drops below 20 PSI, the system becomes vulnerable for bacteria from groundwater or dirt to seep into the pipe and affect the water supply.
Residential water pressure tends to range between 45 and 80 psi (pounds per square inch). Anything below 40 psi is considered low and anything below 30 psi is considered too low; the minimum pressure required by most codes is 20 psi. Pressures above 80 psi are too high.
