Commercial grade carpet usually has a thickness that ranges between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch. This thickness is carefully chosen to balance between comfort and durability. A thinner carpet typically tends to be more durable, which is a crucial factor in high-traffic areas like offices or retail spaces.
📏 Recommended Thickness:
Individual Offices: A thickness of 6 to 8 mm is sufficient since the traffic is generally lighter. Meeting Rooms or Break Areas: A carpet thickness of 8 to 10 mm is recommended for added comfort and improved acoustics.
Here's a handy guide to help you choose the right carpet tile thickness for your space: Low traffic areas (bedrooms, spare rooms): 3mm-5mm. Medium traffic areas (living rooms, hallways): 6mm-8mm. High-traffic areas (family rooms, playrooms, commercial spaces): 9mm+
For this to work carpet tiles hardly ever go over 10mm in thickness and normally most good ones are around 6-7mm thick. The different finishes often denote how thick they ultimately end up but thickness definitely does not mean that one tile is better quality than the other.
At 7mm thick and weighing 800gsm, all our ranges of needle punched garage carpet are durable, waterproof, UV stabilised and soft underfoot.
Light Burdens: This type of garage floor requires at least 4 inches of concrete and is suitable for one or two light cars or trucks. Medium Burdens: Average-sized vehicles and medium to large trucks require a garage floor that is 6 inches thick.
Simply put, a rug's pile refers to the density of fibers—flat (short pile) or shaggy (long). It goes in hand with pile height, which is the thickness of a rug measured from the surface of a rug to its backing.
Often the advice is that you don't have to glue down your carpet tiles and this is fine if your area is small. We think it's much better to glue down the tiles, especially in doorways and around the perimeter. You can reduce the amount of adhesive required by spraying every third or fifth row.
Their thickness typically ranges from 6mm to 12mm. Thinner tiles (6-8mm) are generally suitable for walls, while thicker tiles (8-12mm) are preferred for floors to withstand foot traffic and resist cracking.
Thicker carpets tend to be more expensive upfront than thinner ones due to the additional materials required to create them. Additionally, thicker carpets may require more maintenance to keep them looking their best.
Measuring Techniques
Insert it gently into the carpet pile until it touches the backing, then note where the top of the fibers meets the ruler. For carpet thickness, use a caliper or thickness gauge to measure from the top of the pile to the bottom of the backing.
Standard residential thickness between (1/4 inch / 6.5mm) and (3/8 inch / 9.5mm) works great in most homes, while the thickest vinyl plank flooring at (5/8 inch / 15mm) provides maximum protection and sound reduction.
Carpet is one of the only floor covering options that can significantly reduce impact and reverberation of noise, creating a quieter office environment, more focused social interaction, and increased privacy.
The average lifespan for a commercial carpet in the US is seven years. You can stretch that out to a decade with the right maintenance plan, but if it has been longer than that, then it's likely time to consider replacement.
Commercial carpet tiles are available in thicknesses ranging from 3 mm all the way up to ¼ inch or more. These thinner dimensions allow you to lay the squares on top of your existing floor while still fitting flush against door jams and allowing doors to swing freely.
Even though spills appear dry, mold can grow under the carpet if the moisture remains. This can cause problems with rot and air quality. Moisture barriers are essential for keeping any mold at bay.
Typically, broadloom carpet has a lower upfront cost, comes in a wider variety of colors and styles and is more popular. Carpet tiles typically cost more per square foot, but their modular design simplifies installation and replacement and produces far less waste.
Medium pile – 7mm to 13mm
Medium pile carpets are the Goldilocks of the carpet world. Being able to be soft and hardwearing.
Most carpets call for 7/16-inch padding. Choose stiff, stable padding with a thickness of 3/8-inch or less for a low-pile carpet.
Frieze is a twist pile carpet which has a thick and curly pile, and is extremely hardwearing. Frieze carpets are great at hiding dirt, stains and seams, and they minimise footprints and hoovering marks.
A more dense, close-knit pile resulting in a heavier carpet will also have a higher price point due to the use of more material.
Combination (felt/rubber) underlay is considered the 'best of both worlds because it combines the properties of two materials: the felt brings warmth and comfort, and the recycled rubber brings durability and sound reduction.
