Measure the exact distance between inside surfaces of window frame at top, middle, bottom, and use the narrowest width. This will be your window opening measurement. Measure height of window from inside surface at top of window down to sill, or to the point where fabric is to reach.
Measure Lampshade Height and Slant
Start at the bottom edge and measure straight up. The height will be the measurement that is level with the top edge. The height is not the same as the slant unless the sides of the shade are perfectly vertical. If the sides are not vertical, find the length of the slant next.
Using a tape measure, measure the top of the shade from one edge to the other, taking care to hold the tape as close to the center as possible to get the correct diameter. Next, turn the lamp shade upside down and repeat the same technique to get the bottom diameter.
Shade height – Your shade should be 2/3 the height of your base. Shade width – Your shade should be twice the width of the base. Pleats say traditional.
As shapes of sun- shades are different for the two types, therefore, different amounts of energy will be penetrating in each case. Calculations have been carried out for southern and eastern windows. penetration depth = h tan Z cos A. For an eastern window, it is penetration depth = -h tan Z sin A.

When replacing a lamp shade, the first thing to know is that all types of fitters (the part that connects the shade to the lamp base) are not universal or interchangeable.
Follow This Rule to Pick the Perfect Lampshade
First, measure the base and height of your lamp. The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp. So for a 6-inch lamp base, the shade should be at least 12 inches wide.
If you're shopping for a new lamp shade, follow these general guidelines to get you started: Height: The shade should be 1/3 the overall height of the lamp, give or take. Width: The width of your shade should be 2x the width of the lamp base. Keep in mind that this is just a starting point.
When matching a shade with a lamp base, it's important to consider the type of lamp shade fitter. The fitter is the part of the shade that attaches directly to the lightbulb. In most cases, the type of fitter is not interchangeable, so be sure to match the shade attachment to a compatible lamp base.
The clutch system involves a chain or cord that's connected to a clutch mechanism. Pulling the chain or cord allows you to easily adjust the fabric's height to your preferred position. This system allows you to have precise control over the position of your shades. Motorized roller shades are gaining popularity.
Measure the exact height from the top inside edge down to the window sill/window bottom in THREE places: left, middle, right. Take the largest/longest of the three measurements (rounded up to the nearest 1/8th inch). This is the height you will order.
Identifying Color Differences Using CIE L*a*b* Coordinates
As shown below, L* indicates lightness, a* is the red/green coordinate, and b* is the yellow/blue coordinate.
Measure the width inside the window opening at the top and round down to the nearest 1/8-inch measurement. Measure the height inside the window opening from the top of the window opening to the sill. If your window doesn't have a sill, measure to the point you'd like the shade to reach.
Use the formula s = h/tan A to calculate shadow length. See the table below for an example. Sun angle calculators are available on the Web which will provide the sun angle (A) and azimuth angle for a given location based on the date and time. The azimuth angle is used to plot the shadow direction on the ground.
To determine whether to shade above the line or below the line, choose a point that is not on the line and test its coordinates in the original inequality. If the coordinates of the point satisfy the inequality, then the area above or below the line, containing the point, will be shaded.
These measurements are always listed the same way: the distance in inches across the top, across the bottom, on the slant (if applicable), and the height.
Do all the lampshades in a room need to match? Certainly not! Yes, a pair of matching shades on identical table lamps is a beautiful thing (see Pairing table lamps: why, where and how to use matching table lights) but mixing up your shades is a brilliant way to introduce some visual zing to a room.
Lampshades come all wrapped in plastic and you may be tempted to leave the plastic on because you think it will protect your lampshade. But, actually, you always want to take that off, because the plastic holds the heat in and, while you think you're helping them, you're actually harming them.
