Hoover's mattress vacuum cleaner has 3 modes for thorough cleaning: vacuum function, roll & beat, and UV lamp, which can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria, allergens, and dust mites, as well as prevent their return.
Reduce Humidity: Dust mites hate dry air. Utilize dehumidifiers to maintain an environment where they cannot thrive.
The UV lights in mattress cleaners do not kill dust mites. To have any chance of killing a dust mite, the UV light would have to be held over a single spot for about 60 seconds -- and even then, it would only work if the dust mite was stationary on the surface of the mattress.
Shark Cordless Detect Pro Vacuum
The Shark Cordless Detect Pro is an excellent choice for allergy sufferers due to its ability to effectively clean various surfaces and its auto-empty feature, where the dust cup automatically empties into a larger, sealed container, minimizing exposure to allergens during disposal.
Dry vacuuming doesn't pick up dust mites. Consider steam cleaning carpets when possible. In addition to cleaning the carpet, the heat of the steam kills dust mites. You can buy chemicals (ascaricides) that kill dust mites and that you can use on carpeting and furniture.
Vacuum at least once a week (ideally not to be done by the person allergic to house dust mite). Damp dust the room at least once a week. If you have the allergy and have to do the vacuuming, anti-allergy vacuum cleaners with HEPA filter which do not blow out dust may be helpful. Avoid heavy curtains.
Dust mites can be a major indoor trigger for people with allergies and asthma. Fortunately, an air purifier effectively removes dust, including dust mite allergens, and can help you breathe easier.
Results. Highest immediate mortality of 100% occurred with direct irradiation at 10 cm distance from UV-C lamp and for 60 mins, for both species of mites. The post 24 hours mean mortality rates were (58.4±17.4)% for D. pteronyssinus and (27.7±9.7)% for D.
Daily vacuuming of mattresses significantly reduces house dust mite allergens, bacterial endotoxin, and fungal β-glucan.
Wash all sheets, blankets, pillowcases and bedcovers in hot water that is at least 130 F (54.4 C) to kill dust mites and remove allergens. If bedding can't be washed hot, put the items in the dryer for at least 15 minutes at a temperature above 130 F (54.4 C) to kill the mites.
Signs of Dust Mites in a Mattress
Finding dust mite debris such as tiny black or brown specks on the mattress. Feeling itchy skin while you're in bed. Experiencing allergy symptoms while sleeping, such as watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, a sore throat, coughing, or breathing problems2.
Predators. The predators of dust mites are other allergenic mites (Cheyletiella), silverfish and pseudoscorpions.
Combine Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint or Rosemary oil with water in a spray bottle and spray your bed, linens, and other furniture lightly with a fine mist. Once this mixture air dries, the scent should repel dust mites.
Advanced filtration technology is required to capture particles that minute in size. Ahead, see how to use Dyson's technology to remove dust mites from your home.
Allergen levels are at their highest between May and October, the peak breeding season of house dust mites. Most of the mites die during the winter, but the allergen-containing dust is stirred up by heating systems. This often causes the symptoms experienced by affected patients year-round to worsen during the winter.
Use dust-proof pillow and mattress covers made from a tight-weave fabric that keeps out dust and mites. Use furniture made of wood, plastic, leather, or vinyl (including vinyl mattress covers) that you can wipe clean.
Room Air –Some studies have shown that special allergy air cleaners actually do reduce mite allergens. But avoid electronic or ultrasonic devices that claim to get rid of dust mites. They do not work against dust mites. Dust mites thrive in humid conditions and warm temperatures, so dehumidifiers can sometimes help.
House dust mites disappear when you ventilate your bedroom
However, if you keep your window open for 15 minutes, this only produces a short-lasting effect. What you actually need is a room that is ventilated throughout the day. The Healthbox 3.0 by Renson® provides many options for doing this.
It helps manage moisture and mites but won't kill them instantly. Vinegar: Mix vinegar with water and spray it on areas like bedding, sofas, and curtains. It helps reduce mites but needs to be combined with other methods for better results.
