Plumbing experts at Plumbworld agreed with using lemon juice to remove limescale. They noted that it works better to combat “thicker” limescale. They said: “Lemon juice is best for tackling thicker, more stubborn limescale.
The best way to get rid of stubborn limescale deposits is by soaking the affected area in lemon juice or white vinegar. Some fixtures may be harder to clean than others, so we've put together a step-by-step guide to help you achieve scale-free taps, showerheads and plugholes.
Make up a spray bottle of half white vinegar and half water, and use it regularly as you would a general bathroom cleaning spray on tiles, basins, baths, showers and taps to keep limescale at bay. Always rinse thoroughly with plain water afterwards.
Vinegar and baking soda
Guide the brush around to ensure the toilet limescale is covered and let the solution sit for another 25 minutes before finally flushing. This should do a great job at cleaning the bowl and remove all the limescale from your toilet.
Baking powder for limescale
Baking soda is also an insider tip for removing limescale in the bathroom. Mix two or three teaspoons of baking soda with water to make a soft paste, rub it onto the spots and let it take effect. A few hours later you can easily and carefully scrub off the limescale.
It is also widely used in horticulture. It is a versatile product. In addition to disinfection, the use of hydrogen peroxide helps to remove limescale and corrosion.
Removing Hard Water Deposits From Faucets
Use vinegar to help loosen the hard water film and buildup before scrubbing. Soak a clean rag in vinegar and drape it over the faucet, making sure there is direct contact with all of the hard water deposits. Let the rag sit for at least 30 minutes; an hour is better.
Calcium carbonate buildup can be dissolved using mild acids such as lemon (citric acid), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or white vinegar. This method is ideal for removing limescale deposits from flat surfaces and around taps.

For toilets, stronger acids such as hydrochloric acid are used, whereas for kitchen appliances such as kettles, citric acid, lactic acid, or formic acid are common components of limescale removal powders.
Hydrochloric acid has traditionally been used to remove limescale. It is classified as a Class 8 Dangerous Good with highly corrosive properties.
Another natural method for stubborn limescale is toothpaste, Richard Ghinn explains. 'If you're finding it [limescale] builds up around the base of the tap, and around where the water comes out, there's a simple solution, using something you already have in your bathroom – toothpaste,' he explains.
Use Vinegar & Baking Soda
White vinegar is a natural solution that can be utilized to dissolve calcium buildup. Sitting overnight, you will be able to remove lime buildup from the drain while avoiding the harsh chemicals in traditional drain cleaners.
“Most toilet bowl stains appear in hard water areas, so it's important to remember that bleach won't work, and you will need to use an acid-based product such as limescale remover. While bleach doesn't get rid of limescale, it does make it invisible which blends in with the colour of the toilet bowl.
Use Dawn and some hot water and a cloth or sponge to get into those nooks and crannies where grime and scale tend to build up. You can also combine Dawn with vinegar for stronger cleaning power, especially when tackling hard water stains.
Hard water can be softened by adding sodium carbonate (washing soda) or by passing the water through an ion-exchange column.
Rubbing alcohol can also be used to remove limescale. Apply rubbing alcohol directly to the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes. Scrub with a sponge or brush to remove the limescale.
Don't mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar
Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar can be used on the same surface as long as it dries in between applications but they should never be mixed. When the two are mixed, it creates peracetic acid, which can harm the skin, eyes, throat, nose and lungs.
So does coke remove limescale? Yes. The acid in coke will help to dissolve limescale and there are several examples of it being used to clean toilets, descale kettles and in other circumstances.
Descaling your kettle of limescale has never been easier thanks to Coca-Cola. Just boil a kettle full of Coke and leave to stand for 30 minutes. While other cleaning products may do a better job of restoring a shine to the showerhead, Coca-Cola can effectively unclog the head when other products fail.
If the limescale stains are stubborn, consider purchasing heavy-duty powder cleaner which contains compounds such as trisodium phosphate or borax. Either apply it directly to affected areas or pour a measured amount into the bowl.
