Zinsser B-I-N blocks the stains caused by dampness, but it does not cure the underlying damp problem.
Primers for damp prone areas
Zinsser B-I-N can block stubborn stains such as water stains, fungal degradation, nicotine, oil stains, marker pens stains and more, as well as seal porous surfaces, bleeding knotts and resin streaks.
Anti-damp paints are specialized coatings designed to block moisture, prevent mold growth, and seal water stains on interior and exterior walls. They come in two main varieties: damp-proof coatings (to stop water penetration) and anti-condensation/anti-mould paints (to insulate and prevent surface moisture buildup).
Zinsser Damp Proof Paint. Zinsser Damp Proof Paint is a robust solution for tackling damp issues, providing both protection and aesthetic enhancement to interior walls. This specialist paint is designed to create a moisture-resistant barrier, effectively preventing damp patches and mould growth.
Coo-Var Anti-Damp Paint is a specialist damp wall primer designed for interior walls and ceilings affected by moisture. The resin-based coating contains an active reagent that reacts with surface dampness.
To permanently fix damp walls, you must first identify and eliminate the underlying cause: condensation, rising damp (moisture wicking from the ground), or penetrating damp (leaks from outside). Once the source is resolved, implement proper damp-proofing and ventilation to restore the wall.
Choose Zinsser BIN for tough stain-blocking, odors, and raw wood/MDF. Choose Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for general interior/exterior adhesion, masonry, and painting over glossy surfaces.
Direct warm air at small damp patches to lift off surface moisture and condensation. Run a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture and address the issue of moist air. Improve ventilation by opening windows so that you have plenty of fresh air.
For damp surfaces Mould can often be a problem in rooms where condensation is common, typically laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. But if you have mould on any walls, inside or out, then sung Zinsser BullsEye 123 Primer will seal in mould staining, stopping it leaching into future layers of paint or wallpaper.
Paints with a glossy sheen—like satin or semi-gloss—are best for humid rooms. Instead of absorbing moisture like matte or eggshell paint, they deflect it. Glossy paints can resist moisture because they have a more complex finish.
Choose moisture resistant paint and wallpaper
Opt for painted surfaces and choose paints designed for use in kitchens and bathrooms. With formulas designed to resist moisture and steam, they'll not only help to keep mould at bay, but will also wipe clean more easily if any mould develops.
You should not paint directly over mould and damp, as this could worsen the problem. Instead, you'll need to address the cause of the issue, remove the existing mould and damp, and thoroughly clean and dry out the affected area before redecorating.
Exceptional Stain-Blocking Power
Zinsser B-I-N Primer doesn't just stick to tricky surfaces; it also excels at covering and sealing stains. Whether you're dealing with water stains, smoke damage, or even knots and sap streaks in wood, this primer locks them in and prevents them from bleeding through your paint.
Drying a damp wall takes a few days to several months, depending on the cause. A widely used rule of thumb in the construction industry is that a wall dries at a rate of 1 inch per month once the moisture source has been repaired.
Most satinwood, eggshell, and gloss paints sit better on an undercoat than they do on Zinsser BIN. So, primer (Zinsser BIN), undercoat, then topcoat.
Painted substrates – interior
Do not attempt to seal them with standard wall paint. Allow the coat of Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus or B-I-N® Aqua to dry before finishing with a paint such as Zinsser PermaWhite. Thanks to PermaWhite's moisture-resistant film, you prevent ambient moisture from causing damage again.
Kilz and Zinsser are the two heavyweight titans of the primer world, but they excel in slightly different applications.
The Zinsser Mold Killing Primer is widely considered the best overall product. It is an EPA-registered water-based fungicidal protective coating that kills existing mold, mildew, and bacteria on contact and seals the surface to prevent future growth.
To dry damp walls fast, first eliminate the water source. Strip the wall of wallpaper, artwork, or baseboards to expose moisture. Maximize evaporation using industrial air movers and refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifiers. Maintain a steady room temperature between 21∘C21 raised to the composed with power C21∘C and 26∘C26 raised to the composed with power C26∘C (70∘F70 raised to the composed with power F70∘F to 80∘F80 raised to the composed with power F80∘F), while keeping the room ventilated.
Opening your windows does temporarily purge humid air, but it cannot override the structural causes of persistent damp in your property. That brief surge of airflow feels reassuring: Persistent window condensation may clear from the panes, and the space smells fresher.
Drywall can begin to grow mold in just 24 to 48 hours when exposed to moisture. Because drywall is extremely porous and backed by organic paper, it creates an ideal environment for mold spores to germinate quickly once wet.
Use B-I-N® as a full surface primer on drywall, cured plaster, filled areas, ceiling tiles, wood or metal doors, windows, cabinets, plywood, panelling, trim, glossy paints, clear finishes and other paintable interior surfaces. B-I-N® is also great for exterior spot priming over knots, sap streaks and rust stains.
In most cases only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary. Spot priming is recommended only under high-hiding topcoat finishes. For best results, prime entire surface before painting.
Also consider fossa Block & Bond as a direct alternative to Zinsser BIN, it's a bit nicer to use, and quite a bit cheaper: Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer and Stain Blocker seals surface pores so you use less finish paint.
