MDF Cabinet Cost
Traditionally, MDF is a much cheaper alternative to most natural wood materials which is why it is such a popular building material. Having said that, depending on the colour and quality of the paint used to finish MDF cabinets, they'll typically be 10-15% more expensive than a stained finish cabinet.
On the downside, MDF Board gets easily scratched and cannot be repaired after this. This is unlike wood that can be sanded down to eliminate any damage on the surface. Additionally, MDF Board does not do very well when exposed to extreme heat as the core materials can get damaged.
In terms of consistency, MDF is more compact that plywood (but not when it was initially presented as a product). A few years back, MDF was less durable than solid wood, but technology and manufacturing have advanced and high-end MDF boards are as durable as natural wood.
It is vital to ensure you keep your MDF cabinets dry. If exposed to a pronounced amount of liquid or moisture, they could become soggy and begin to disintegrate. In IKEA cabinets, the boxes are constructed with: MDF for the box core. Melamine foil (a type of laminate that contains no wood) for the veneers covering the sides of the box.

Inspect the Finish and Hardware
The finish should be consistent, with no bubbles or ripples. The hardware should also be of good quality, with a smooth finish and no sharp edges. Finally, check to see if the cabinet is made from solid wood or particle board; solid wood will last longer and is more durable.

Disadvantages of MDF
Because it consists of such fine particles, MDF doesn't hold screws very well. Because it's so dense, MDF is very heavy which can make it more difficult to work with. MDF can't be stained.
MDF's core ingredient is sawdust and small chippings of other timbers. These are all collected waste products from the machining process which makes the material cost much lower than plywood and solid wood.
Other factors that led to the jump in prices include the high cost of woody materials and resins for manufacturing MDF as well as increasing container freight rates. Strong demand for the product has led to a spike in imports to the U.S.
MDF / Paint Grade. • MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is an engineered wood product created by breaking down hardwood or softwood materials into their basic wood fibers, combining that with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.
MDF is much cheaper than real wood. It is also readily available. When you use solid wood for your projects, you will need to purchase more because you have to eliminate pieces with knots and cracks.

Now back to the main point, is furniture made from MDF safe? The answer is now a simple one; yes, it is! If the amount of Formaldehyde is controlled during the manufacturing of MDF, it still would emit Formaldehyde but in truly negligible amounts, much smaller than the scientifically proven safety threshold.
