A-The cabinets are probably particleboard with a fake wood surface that consists of a vinyl covering or ''photo finish'' of the type used on some wall paneling and inexpensive furniture. It is possible to paint over fake wood surfaces of this type, but the work must be carefully done to get good adhesion of the paint.
Paint your formica countertops with epoxy-based paint. Due to its dry nature, it is harder to use and more durable than other regular paints, and it will last longer. Epoxy paints are also available in a variety of colors and styles, making them an excellent choice for painting.

The fundamental differences between thermofoil and laminate stem from their terminology. Many recommend a water-based acrylic primer, paint and top coat. Acrylic paint dries to provide the hard surface needed for heavy-use areas like countertops, while water-based acrylic paint cleans up with water and is low on odors. Either way, you'll want to create proper ventilation in your kitchen while painting.
Lightly Sand the Entire Piece
Laminate is a slick and non-porous surface so it's best to lightly scuff the surface. I use 150-220 grit sandpaper to sand the laminate because it's the BEST way to get the primer and paint to adhere properly. Trust me… this step will ensure your paint job lasts!
Of the three materials, Plywood is the best option for cheap kitchen cabinets. While you can still get nice MDF or particleboard cabinets, we would say to look for plywood. Our least expensive cabinets are plywood boxes with solid wood doors. They are quality construction for a cheap price.
Melamine is cheaper than laminate as it is manufactured by a method which is not cost intensive. Laminate is more durable than melamine and more resistant to heat and chemicals. Melamine is produced with a pressure of just 300-500psi while to make a laminate a pressure of 1400psi is required.
