Installation errors, clogged filters, water lines and broken inlet valves can cause a GE water dispenser to malfunction.
On models with a water filter, a clogged or partially clogged filter will result in no water or slow running water from the refrigerator dispenser. Please change the filter. We recommend replacing the water filter every 6 months.
After you change the water filter, press and hold the the RESET WATER FILTER button for 3 seconds until the red light goes off. On some models the light goes out and on others it will turn green; either is considered normal.
Sounds like there might be an airlock or a kink in the water line. Try running the water dispenser for a minute or two with the filter out to see if anything clears. If that doesnt work, check the water line connection at the back and make sure its not pinched. Could also be a failing valve, worth checking!
If no water is flowing from your bottled water cooler or dispenser, there are generally two main causes: either the reservoir has become frozen, or the air filter is water-saturated due to a leaky bottle or dirty.
If you just replaced the water filter and don't have water from the dispenser, the reservoir tank or tubing has not filled yet. Press the dispenser for several minutes to purge air from the line and make sure all the tubing is filled with water.
Repair a Refrigerator Water Dispenser
You can expect to pay $175 to $500 to repair a water dispenser, depending on the issue. There are many parts to a water dispenser, and many things can go wrong.
If the water line is clogged, it can usually be cleaned out by running vinegar and baking soda through the line. Clogs are likely to occur if there is a flaw in the water line or if the water filter is not updated.
Many times, the problem is caused by a clogged filter or a frozen water line and can be easily fixed. However, if the issue persists, it may be necessary to call in a professional for refrigerator repair.
After you change the filter, you must press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad until the red light goes off. The light will either disappear or turn green. If you do not hold the pad in, the red light will stay on. Also, if you hold the pad in for a long period of time, the light may go off and then come back on.
Many refrigerators have built-in water filtration that filters sediment and contaminants from the water going to the dispenser and/or the icemaker. If you do not need or want to use the water filter, a bypass plug must be used in place of the filter.
The most common reasons your GE Cafe refrigerator water dispenser is not working are a locked compressor, old water filter or a malfunctioning dispenser.
If the water filter is not connected or inserted well, the water dispenser may not work. Make sure the water filter is locked in place properly. A clogged water filter is often a culprit of poor water pressure. You can also increase the water pressure by replacing the water filter in a timely manner.
If it is pressed too hard, it can get stuck in the on position. To release it, try pressing it again. If this does not work, you can try unplugging your fridge for 5 to 10 minutes. This can also help release a stuck button.
Flushing the Water System:
Use a sturdy container to depress and hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds and then release it for 5 seconds. Repeat the process until water starts to flow at a steady pass and all the air is out of the water line.
Factors That Affect Water Dispensers' Lifespan
While the average lifespan of a water dispenser is five to ten years, this longevity can vary drastically depending on how often it is used and how well it is maintained.
Compressor Issues
The compressor is like the heart of your fridge. If it breaks, it's one of the most expensive parts to replace. Fixing a compressor can cost anywhere from $200 to $650.
Locate the Water Line: The water line is usually in the back of your fridge. If you're unsure where it is, check your refrigerator's manual. Use a Turkey Baster or Funnel: Fill a turkey baster or small funnel with warm water and white vinegar. Insert it into the water line and gently squeeze.
