3 Types of Carpet Styles
Carpets are made of fibers that are cut, looped or cut and looped. Although there are several different subcategories of carpet styles, all fall within one of these three groups.
The term Saxony pile refers to a particular type of cut-pile carpet with fibers that are very soft and dense. The relatively short fibers stand straight up and down to create a lush, fuzzy surface.
Outdoor needlebond carpet is made by repeatedly needling UV resistant synthetic fibers to make a felted piece of material. It's also known as polypropylene, a type of thermoplastic used to make a wide range of household products, medical devices and more. Because it's derived from plastic, olefin carpet is best installed in places with the potential for water damage.
In its most extreme form, it's known as shag carpet. Cable has long, thick fibers and is very comfortable underfoot.
Textured plush is similar to plush pile, but the yarns are cut to different lengths and laid at different angles, lending the carpet a little more depth to its surface. As a result, textured plush carpets can be thicker than plush pile carpets, with more surface texture and better resistance to footprints and tracks.
The six types of carpet are textured, plush, frieze, cable, Berber, and cut-and-loop. Each type has its own look and performance conditions.

Saxony carpet is a cut loop pile carpet. Its pile is designed to be incredibly dense, for a soft feeling underfoot. This makes it popular for bedrooms and living rooms. Sometimes Saxony carpets are called a plush carpet, based on the luxurious style and feel.

Carpet types
Broadloom (or wall to wall) carpet is manufactured in long, wide rolls and laid on backing material over the substrate flooring.

What Is Deep Pile or High Pile Carpet? Deep pile, or high pile, carpets have long, tall fibers. Higher fibers often generate the best long-term performance. These long fibers give the carpet a plush appearance and texture. You could use high pile carpet in low traffic areas.
No surprise, then, that the majority (~97%) of carpets available are made from manmade or synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, Triexta, and polypropylene or olefin. Natural fibers make up the remainder, with wool in the top place because of its crush-resistance.
A general rule of thumb for most residential carpet applications is to choose cushion no more than 7/16 inch thick and no less than 1/4 inch with 6 pounds per cubic feet density. If the carpet is a berber or a low profile carpet, choose a cushion no more than 3/8 inch thick with 8 pounds density.
