There are two main types of magnetic locks: surface-mounted and mortice. A surface-mounted lock gets its name from the place it's installed.
What is a Maglock? There are two basic styles of magnetic locks, surface mounted and morticed; commonly referred to as shear locks.
Although there are many types of locks, the four most common are padlocks, deadbolts, knob locks, and levers.
An electromagnetic lock, magnetic lock, or maglock is a locking device that consists an electromagnet and an armature plate.
The primary difference between electric strike locks (door strike) and magnetic locks (maglocks) is their power requirement. Maglocks are fail-safe, while electric strikes are generally fail-secure. In other words: Magnetic locks require power to lock the door, whereas electric locks require power to unlock the door.
Maglocks require constant power to stay locked, making them fail-safe. If the power goes out for any reason, the maglock's magnetic hold will release and the opening will no longer be secured. On the other hand, fail-secure locking functions require power to unlock a door.

Drawbacks of magnetic door lock for business
Security limitations: While magnetic locks are extremely strong, they may be more susceptible to tampering in comparison to other options because of their power supply.
Simply push the button and pull the handle if you want to go outside. You might be wondering, how does one unlock the lock if the power cuts off? The truth is you don't have to worry, you won't be trapped inside. If the electricity is shut down, the lock will automatically unlock itself.
There are three types of magnets: permanent magnets, temporary magnets, and electromagnets. Permanent magnets emit a magnetic field without the need for any external source of magnetism or electrical power.
Group 2 combination locks are the most common type found on home safes today. They provide one-, two-, or three-number combinations. Group 1 locks provide a greater degree of protection as they can offer combinations of up to six numbers.
These are principally: paramagnets, ferromagnets, antiferromagnets and ferrimagnets. In a paramagnet, the magnetic moments tend to be randomly orientated due to thermal fluctuations when there is no magnetic field.
The power for an electromagnet lock is DC (direct current), around 5–6 W. The current is around 0.5 A when the voltage supply is 12 VDC and 0.25 A when using 24 VDC (varies between manufacturers and if there are one or two coils in the block).
Any magnetic lock with a holding force less than 1200 lbs. should only be used for traffic control, as would a light or medium duty electric strike. A holding force of 650 lbs. (Figure 1) is typical for most magnetic locks fit for traffic control and they may be easily defeated.
Common “failure to release” problems are associated with the power source, and the common “failure to lock: problems are associated with the door, including poorly hung door, the door frame getting warped, twisted or bowed, worn out tears and hinges or improperly installed door closers.
Most maglocks will also have an anti-residual magnetism facility, which is usually a small "thrusting magnet", designed to repel the magnet from the armature plate when power is removed from the magnet. The door will then open as any residual magnetism is broken.
One method is to use a credit card or driver's license. Insert the card into the space between the lock and door frame and then apply pressure to the card. This will push the card against the locking mechanism and allow the door to be opened. Another method is to use a small screwdriver or nail file.
The most secure type of door lock for homes is typically a deadbolt door lock. The 'deadbolt' refers to the locking mechanism, which uses a bolt that extends or 'deadlocks' into the door frame.
Misalignment of the Lock
Another common problem with maglocks is misalignment, which can cause the lock to bind or not release properly. This can be caused by a poorly installed door frame, a misaligned strike plate, or a warped door.
Most dead bolt type locks lock over center, so a magnet can't pull it out of the locked position. Regular house door locks have a pin that prevents the catch from opening unless the knob is turned. A primitive bolt might be drawn open by a magnet, and there are lots of cabinet magnetic actuated locking mechanisms.
