WATER OFTEN
Water whenever the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, saturating the soil until water runs from the drainage holes and soil media no longer bubbles. Daily watering may be needed during the heat of the summer, even if the container is a large one.
Drooping rose buds and leaves turning yellow are some of the signs of overwatering. Once you notice them, you should immediately take action.
Rose bushes can also droop from too much water or soil with poor drainage. You can tell if your rose bush is overwatered because the leaves will turn yellow and droop.
If possible, apply the water directly to the soil around each plant. Overhead watering wets the foliage and increases disease problems. If overhead watering is unavoidable, morning is the best time to water roses. Morning applications allow the foliage to dry quickly.
Give your roses 1 to 2 inches of water each week in a single watering session from early spring through fall. Increase the frequency to every three or four days in hot and dry weather. Porous soils will also benefit from additional deep soakings.
Don't water over the flowers or foliage. Watering foliage can encourage disease problems, particularly if it remains on the leaves overnight. We recommend a softer spray rather than a fierce deluge from a jet spray or pressure hose. If using a hose, try to get a fitting that has a rose setting.
One of the quickest, first signs of overwatering your plants is to observe occurs at the tip of the leaf. If the tip of the leaf is turning brown this is a sign of overwatering. Too little water will result in your plant's leaves feeling dry and crispy to the touch while too much water results in soft and limp leaves.
Wind and dry heat can cause roses to dry out faster. On extremely hot summer days, expect to water your roses each day.
If the soil is wet, it's overwatered - if it's dry, it's underwatered. Browning edges: Another symptom that can go both ways. Determine which by feeling the leaf showing browning: if it feels crispy and light, it is underwatered. If it feels soft and limp, it is overwatered.
The good news is that most plants will bounce back between 7-14 days if they're given proper care (which includes rehydration). If this isn't possible because major damage was done or little healthy root system exists then expect about 2 weeks until improvement can be seen.
The summer months will bring the heat so watch out for buds, leaves, new growth, and petals that show signs of wilting. This is an obvious sign that your rose needs more water. The leaves might also start to turn yellow (and dry) as a sign of requiring more water.
Give the soil surrounding your rose a nice even soak. Avoid watering the leaves as much as you can as overly wet conditions facilitate the spread of fungus such as blackspot and powdery mildew.
How Long Do Potted Roses Last? Container roses can last between two to three years, then will require repotting so they can keep growing with fresh soil. If your plant has outgrown its pot, be sure to buy a new one with drainage holes!
Never plant under trees, as this will lead to root dryness and toxic drip from the leaf canopy. If possible pick a spot with a bit of shelter from cold winds. Although roses like to be in damp soil, they do not like sitting in water, so try to pick a spot with reasonable drainage.
As long as you have plenty of sun and a container, you can grow beautiful roses on a patio, deck or even an apartment balcony. Avoid big shrub roses that are likely to outgrow the pot, as well as climbers and old roses. Climbers need support, and old roses tend to sprawl. Look for compact patio roses instead.

Roses love sunshine, but they tend to struggle when temperatures rise above 85℉. Many of us are experiencing much hotter summers than we're used to, making the need for heat-tolerant roses increase, even in some northern climates. Roses experiencing heat stress may experience leaf scorch, wilting, and leaf loss.
While most rose bushes love the sun, the intense afternoon heat can be a major stressor for them, especially when bud and bloom rose bushes (those growing, budded, or blooming in their nursery pots) are planted during the hotter period of the growing season.
As for the leaves that still have brown tips, you can snip the dead parts away with a pair of scissors without hurting the plant. For some plants that have long, strap-like foliage, such as dracaena or spider plant, make your cuts at an angle to imitate the natural shape of the leaves.
Signs of Overwatering Flowers
The flowers will be drooping and wilted. Leaves on the flowers may look yellowish. The Flower may have a brownish color. Flowers stem may be dry.
When a plant is first becoming overwatered, leaves turn yellow. If soil doesn't have a chance to dry out before you water again, leaves start to wilt. When overwatering is the problem, wilted leaves are soft and limp. (If too little water is the issue, wilted leaves are dry and crispy.)
Best Time To Water Roses
Watering early in the day allows the water to soak deeply into the soil and slowly dry up as the day goes on. In addition, morning watering allows the foliage of the rose to dry out in the sun, preventing powdery mildew or blackspot developing from wet conditions overnight.
By adding coffee grounds to your roses, you create a barrier that will keep pests away and allow your rose bushes to thrive.
