I've been using Mr Sheen, or the lower priced alternatives for 20 years on all my cars without problems. It is basically a spray on silicone and can also be used on side and rear windows and mirrors to help disperse water. I give my cars a proper polish once per year and use Mr Sheen on them every 2nd wash.

1,500 grit is a good starting point, though you'll need to be cautious about sanding it off too much. It's better if you have 2,000 grit, at least, as you can then move up and up to 2,500 grit, and the final 3,000 grit for an ultra-fine finishing touch.

Since most furniture polish is oil-based, a grease-cutting dish liquid can work well to remove it. Combine some dish liquid in water to make suds, skim the suds off the surface of the water with a cloth and wipe the suds onto the polished area. Continue washing the surface with the sudsy water until the polish is gone.
Avoid scourers and abrasives - they will damage the surface. Do not cut or chop on the laminate surface. Keep waxes and polishes (such as Mr Sheen or Pledge) well away, they merely dull the natural shine. Do not place burning cigarettes onto laminate surfaces.

Check how deep the scratch is. If it grips your fingernail, use a 3000-grit sandpaper. For anything shallower, opt for a 5000-grit sandpaper. Spray soapy water onto the scratch and the sandpaper.
Work at a slow speed and increase gradually if needed. Typically, you'll work between 1000-1200 RPM, never exceeding 1800 RPM. Keep the polisher moving at all times to avoid burning the paint. Avoid corners and the edges of panels where the paint is thinner.
