Schlage locks have a thicker and stronger lock housing that protects the cylinder from any forced entry. The bolt size is longer and more solid as compared to Kwikset. The bolt in fact fits very tightly into the door frame and does not jiggle.
You can identity the type of Kwikset lock you have by locating a small vertical slot on the plug. This is located to the left of the cylinder's keyway. Conventional pin tumbler locks will not have these slots.
If your door has a 3-point-locking system, the brand name may appear on top or bottom plating. Option 2: Look for the brand name on the escutcheon plate on the front of the door. Option 3: Did you save your receipt for the door hardware? Look for the brand name there.
Re-key Schlage Lock to Kwikset
Basically, you cannot re-key the lock from Schlage to Kwikset, but you can change the lock cylinder from Schlage to Kwikset. A locksmith will be able to do it for you. Changing the lock cylinder will still cost less from changing the lock itself.
To begin with, the two most popular types of locks are Kwikset and Schlage. If you look at the two pictures above, you can see the examples of each key.
