According to Mental Floss, the value that customers place on a light in the freezer is so small that the manufacturers actually lose money by including lights as a feature in the freezer.
Light is not in the freezer because it will increase the temperature of the freezer and ice will start melting. Also, the fridge compartment is comparatively larger and more spacious, hence requiring lightning to see through various compartments of it.
Back in the days before frost-free freezers, a freezer light would have quickly become covered up by ice crystals, rendering it relatively useless. Since that time, so the story goes, people have become so used to having no light in their freezer, manufacturers didn't see the point in adding one (see Theory 2).
First, you can try tightening your light bulb or replacing it. Additionally, you can check your refrigerator door switch to see whether it activates when the fridge door is open. When it comes to other complex issues, such as with the wiring or the socket, you will need to contact a professional for repairs.
Many freezers, especially ones that are less costly, tend not to have a light in this smaller compartment, even though there are usually lights in the fridge section.
You would think that an interior light would be a standard feature in an upright freezer, but such is not the case. Interior lighting is an optional freezer feature that is often overlooked during the buying process.
The most common reasons your Whirlpool freezer light is not working are a malfunctioning electronic control board, broken LED light assembly or a bad power supply board.
In these cases it is normal that the red indicator light goes on. It goes off automatically when the interior temperature reaches approximately 5 degrees F. Yellow = Fast freeze switch. If the yellow indicator light goes on, the compressor continues cooling until it is turned off again.
Unplug your refrigerator
Disconnect your fridge from its power source by removing the power cord from the wall outlet. You may hear some whooshing or knocking noises after you do so; that's normal. Make sure your fridge stays unplugged for several minutes, otherwise the reset won't work.
If your freezer light isn't working, it could be similar to fixing a refrigerator light. Make sure your appliance hasn't been unplugged and the outlet is working. Frost buildup can also cause a door switch to not function properly. Use a warm, damp cloth to melt any frost that may be hindering the door switch.
Both the refrigerator and freezer can have lights in them, but as soon as you close the door, the lights go out, so there is no extra heating. Also, a 40 watt appliance bulb does not give off very much heat, and the newer LED lights give off lots of light with a bare minimum of heat.
Who thought of putting lightbulbs in there? The cold temperature helps the Led bulbs last longer .
If the light in the Freezer is not working, there are three possible causes. The light bulb could be burned out. The light switch could be defective. There could be open internal wiring.
If your appliance is fitted with a standard bulb, then the light cover will be clipped into position. This can be removed by squeezing the cover. Some older models also have a screw which needs to be taken out before removing the cover. Always unplug appliance from the electrical supply before replacing the bulb.
Don't put bulbs in the freezer as this is too cold and will kill them. The average fridge is at approximately 4°C and this is an ideal temperature. Place the bulbs in a breathable container such as a paper bag and start chilling before the end of March. Continue for at least eight weeks before planting in May.
Signs that Your Freezer is Dying
Spoilage – A properly functional freezer will keep the foods in good condition for a long time. If the food starts rotting before its expiration date, the freezer isn't working efficiently and needs repairs.
The high temperature alarm or the red light indicator will be on when your freezer is connected to the mains for the first time. This means that the temperature inside your appliance is still too warm. Keep your freezer door closed and the light will go out in a few hours.
Setting the Temperature
The temperature selection on a Chest Freezer is made by setting the dial from ONE to SEVEN, with SEVEN being the coldest. The normal safe freezing level is obtained by setting the control on FOUR.
The light in the freezer is located in the back right corner under the ice bucket area. It's an egg shaped plastic cover, and you'll need to slid a putty knife under the cover and push toward the light to release the clip.
Check that the plug is properly inserted into the socket and the switch is set to on. If the sockets work, check the fuse in the plug by putting the fuse into another appliance's plug or by putting a new fuse which you know works into the fridge freezer's plug.
Check to see if the bulb is burned out, and if it is, replace it with an appliance bulb of the same wattage. If the bulb isn't burned out but the light is still off, there might not be electricity running to the freezer. If this is the case, the safety signal light outside the freezer will also be off.
The benefit of that light is that your food is easier to find. However, since people tend to open their refrigerators more than their freezers, the cost of adding a freezer light outweighs the benefits. For manufacturers, the money they save justifies their decision to forego that second light.
The GREEN light indicates that the appliance has an electrical supply. The AMBER light indicates that the Fast Freeze option is on. The light is combined with a switch. The RED light is warning that there is a high temperature inside the cabinet.
NOTE: Not all appliance bulbs will fit your freezer. Be sure to replace the bulb with one of the same size, shape, and wattage.
