Lead pipes for carrying drinking water were well recognized as a cause of lead poisoning by the late 1800s in the United States. By the 1920s, many cities and towns were prohibiting or restricting their use.
Keep in mind that under normal conditions and usage, lead from plumbing does not leach into water. The problem with lead pipes (and the reason why they should be replaced if possible) is because corrosion of the pipes due to high mineral content or low pH can result in leaching.
Today we know that this material doesn't belong in our homes—and certainly not in our drinking water systems. Lead is notoriously dangerous, with medical and public health experts agreeing that there is no safe level of lead in the human body.
The 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Lead Ban required the use of “lead-free” pipe, solder, and flux in the installation or repair of any public water system or any plumbing in a residential or non-residential facility providing water for human consumption.
The federal government banned the use of leaded pipe and solder in new plumbing systems in 1986, but many remaining pipe networks in older cities and homes predate the policy; the EPA estimates there are still 6 to 10 million lead service lines across the country.
Boiling water does not reduce lead levels and may actually increase them. Test your water. The only way to know if lead has been reduced by letting it run is to check with a test. If letting the water run does not reduce lead, consider other options to reduce your exposure.
Some faucet manufactures produce plastic faucets that have virtually zero lead. Other manufactures are substituting other metals for the lead in the brass, inserting copper tubes inside the brass faucets, or applying special coatings on the inside of the faucets in order to minimize or eliminate lead leaching.
If the pipe is covered or wrapped, expose a small area of metal. Use the flat edge of a screwdriver or other tool to scratch through any corrosion that may have built up on the outside of the pipe. If the scraped area is shiny and silver, your service line is lead. A magnet will not stick to a lead pipe.
If a magnet sticks, it is a steel pipe. Magnets will ONLY stick to steel. They will NOT stick to lead or copper. Lead is dull, very soft, and will turn a shiny silver color when scratched.
This short-term measure will protect you and your family, but if there are lead pipes or another source of lead present, these should be replaced as soon as possible.
What about other uses of water? Bathing and showering is safe, even if the water contains lead over the EPA's action level. Human skin does not absorb lead in water. Washing dishes is safe.
Your responsibility to disclose lead pipes in your home will depend on where the property is located. The federal government requires you to disclose lead-based paint when selling the house, but not lead pipes.
Exposure to even low levels of lead can cause damage over time, especially in children. The greatest risk is to brain development, where irreversible damage can occur. Higher levels can damage the kidneys and nervous system in both children and adults.
Lead pipes are more likely to be found in older cities and homes built before 1986. Among homes without lead service lines, the most common problem is with brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and plumbing with lead solder.
For more-severe cases, your doctor might recommend: Chelation therapy. In this treatment, a medication given by mouth binds with the lead so that it's excreted in urine.
If your supply pipe is made of lead, we would advise you consider replacing it. Under the lead pipe replacement scheme, we may be able to offer a free like for like connection of a replacement water supply pipe (i.e. same size), from your boundary to the water main in the road or footpath.
If you drop a bar magnet in a vertical copper pipe it will fall slowly because it induces a magnetic field in the pipe that resist motion of the magnet. Currents are created by conducting metal like copper.
Alloying lead with ferromagnetic or paramagnetic materials is yet another method. By including ferromagnetic elements like iron and paramagnetic elements like aluminum in a small amount, the lead alloy has the ability to produce a magnetic effect.
Who Can File Lead Poisoning Lawsuits? You should know that in California, you generally have two years from the time damage occurred or from the time you should have discovered the damage to file a claim. Parents have only two years from the time of the damage to bring a claim on behalf of their children.
The ban took effect in 1986 (with many states waiting until 1988 to enforce it), but the legislation was far from comprehensive: It didn't require existing lead service lines to be replaced.
While there is no inherent hazard in cast iron pipes, it's worth noting that lead, which is known to pose health risks when swallowed, is frequently found in the interconnections and joints.
Since lead pipes aren't used in the production of bottled water, the FDA has set the limit for lead in bottled water at 5 ppb (parts per billion). The FDA bottled water quality regulations require bottled water companies to regularly sample and analyze their water. Samples must be found to be safe and sanitary.
It defines "lead free" as not more than 8% lead with respect to pipes and fittings and not more than 4% by dry weight with respect to plumbing fittings and fixtures. All Moen faucets already meet this standard, and will continue to meet this standard in the future.
