What causes stainless steel to rust in the dishwasher? Damaging chemicals, salts, grease, moisture and heat for prolonged periods of time, all of which are present inside your dishwasher, can cause pitting and corrosion on stainless steel.
Sprinkle or squirt Bar Keepers Friend cleanser onto a wet dishcloth or non-abrasive sponge. Scrub rust stains to remove them. Do not leave BKF on utensils for longer than one minute. Rinse and repeat the application as necessary to remove rust.
Vinegar can be used as a temporary fix if you run out of rinse aid, but prolonged use is not recommended. The acidity in vinegar can limit the cleaning power of the detergent and can also lead to premature deterioration of rubber seals and gaskets inside of your dishwasher.
Vinegar is an excellent DIY stainless steel cleaner. You'll just need white vinegar, warm water and an empty spray bottle. Microfiber cloths are recommended as they don't leave lint behind, but you can use a paper towel too.
