Clogged or Dirty Air Filters A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing your furnace to overheat and shut off the burners. In such cases, the blower fan will continue running, but no warm air will be distributed throughout your home.
In this article, we discuss three of the most common reasons why a furnace turns on without generating heat. These include incorrect thermostat settings, airflow problems, inadequate furnace fuel, and ignition problems.
Check Furnace Thermostat Settings
Incorrect thermostat settings can be the cause behind no heat coming out of the vents, even with the furnace blower turned on. Check the thermostat to ensure the setting is in HEAT instead of COOL. It is a common mistake that happens. The fan runs continuously when it is switched on.
If your furnace is blowing hot but your home is still cold, it may be a problem with your ductwork. You may have leaky or damaged ducts that are letting hot air escape and cold air in. Sometimes a damper in the system can get miss-adjusted or come loose, thereby inadvertently blocking or reducing airflow.
Ensure your thermostat has not been set to a lower setting by someone else. Check your thermostat's batteries and replace any that are exhausted or defective. Clean all of the parts of your furnace, especially the ones that are susceptible to dust and dirt.
If your heater doesn't start, chances are the problem stems from having a dirty furnace. Having dirt on your blower motor or flamer sensor could render your furnace unable to perform. When the blower motor is too dirty, it won't pass enough cool air to the heat exchanger, leading to equipment failure.
Insufficient airflow or insufficient gas pressure. A defective, malfunctioning ignition board, flame sensor, light switch, thermostat, thermocouple, fan limiter, or draft inducer fan. The drainage line is blocked, resulting in a full condensate pan. Temperatures are so low that the furnace cannot stay lit.
With a furnace blowing cold air, the first question you should ask is if the furnace has been turned ON. Two thermostat issues that could cause your furnace to blow cold air include (1) your thermostat is still set to COOL, not HEAT and (2) your thermostat fan is set to ON, not AUTO.
If your furnace won't turn on but fan works, it could be that the pilot light (or ignition switch) is out. A nifty safety feature that your furnace has that you may be unaware of is your pilot light which prevents pumping natural gas or propane into your home.
Short cycling is a common sign of a bad flame sensor. The sensor thinks that there isn't a flame, so it shuts off the gas as a safety mechanism. Except, there is a flame and without the gas to supply it, it dies. This is a frustrating problem, but an HVAC technician can fix it.
If your HVAC fan keeps running but there's no heat, your fan limit switch may be set to manual override. Follow these troubleshooting steps: Locate your fan limit switch and check to see if the white knob (see pic below) is pressed in. If so, your switch is set to manual override, or “always running” mode.
The first thing to check is your thermostat. It might be clicking yet failing to trigger the heating. Ensure it's set to 'heat' mode and the temperature is above the current room temperature. Incorrect settings or a malfunctioning thermostat can be a primary reason for the furnace clicking but not turning on.
If your thermostat won't turn on the heat in your home, change out the batteries and see if that fixes the problem. If not, your faulty thermostat could be the result of the following: A tripped breaker. Loose wiring.
If your furnace is not blowing hot air, or is not operating at all, a component called the fan limit switch or high limit switch may have malfunctioned. You may also see an error message on your thermostat, or a blinking LED light on the furnace control board.
Possible reasons include thermostat issues (incorrect settings or dead batteries), power problems (tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse), and furnace malfunctions (dirty air filter, faulty ignition system, or tripped safety switches). Checking these areas can help identify the issue.
Most likely, your furnace is making a clicking noise and not providing heat because your furnace's spark igniter is trying to ignite your pilot light or burners but is failing to do so. In other words, there's an ignition system malfunction that needs to be fixed. Otherwise, your furnace won't start.
The cause of your furnace not blowing hot air could be the thermostat configuration, a dirty air filter, the high limit switch, a clogged condensate line, insufficient fuel, leaky ducts, ignition problems, a blocked burner, flame sensor issues, gas valve malfunctions, a cracked heat exchanger, or a clogged coil.

Checking your thermostat is the best place to start. Make sure it's set to “heat” and that you've set the temperature higher than the current room temperature. If that doesn't resolve the problem, try switching your fan to “on” to force the furnace to start working.
Leave the breaker(s) off for at least 10 minutes while the system is off and “rebooting.” After 10 minutes have elapsed, go back to the breaker box and flip the HVAC breaker(s) back on.
