ATTIC STAIRS Pull-down stairs are another common type of attic access. The frame for the stairs fits in a rough opening and leaves a gap, much like that for a door or window, which must be sealed. If the gap is small (less than ½ inch), caulk can be used as the sealant.
One inexpensive and common type of access is referred to as a scuttle hole or attic hatch, which is simply a removable portion of the ceiling that allows access to the attic above. An attic hatch is commonly located in a closet or main hallway.

OPENING SIZE
Measure the rough opening in your ceiling, both the width and length. Standard openings are 22.5” x 54”, but some homes have wider openings. Conversely, some homes have smaller openings (or hatches).
Finish up by sealing the access hatch with self-sticking weather stripping. If your hatch rests directly on the moldings, add 2-1/2 inch wide stops around the opening. The stops provide a wider surface for attaching the weatherstrip and a space to mount hook-and-eye fasteners.
