A standard garage door track requires between 12 and 15 inches of clearance above the height of the door. Our general rule of thumb is to add 2 ft of building height onto the door height. This allows plenty of room for the track, as well as for any openers, ceiling finishes, lights, etc.
Overhead garage doors usually roll back horizontally when they open. At a minimum, the top of the door needs some extra room to make the roll possible. As a standard, garage doors should have a minimum of 10 inches of headroom if they possess extension springs. Or, at least 12 inches for those with torsion springs.
Minimum Clearance for Garage Door Installations. You'll want a minimum of 15 inches of overhead clearance for a standard garage door with an electric opener.
The headroom: Our rollup garage doors need anywhere between 10.5 and 31 inches of headroom. The specifications for each garage door can help you determine which one will fit best in your space.
You'll need to factor in what you want to keep in the garage to help you choose the right size door. For single cars, 7-10 feet in width is usually good. You'll want more room for larger cars, but you can get away with 7 feet for a smaller vehicle.
For a single-car garage, the door can be between 7 and 10 feet wide. A 7-foot door will be a tight squeeze, an 8-foot door will be a little more comfortable, and 9+ feet makes parking and opening car doors very easy.
Space is the main difference between rolling and sectional doors. Rolling doors are more compact, which makes them easier to fit into a commercial or industrial workspace. Sectional doors, by contrast, require more planning to prevent them from interfering with existing equipment.
You should add 2-1/2″ to the height of the actual door. This will give you room to space the door frame off of the sub-floor.
Determine Side Room Space
For the door to be properly secured and for the track to have enough space to be installed, there needs to be at least 3 ¾ inches of room on either side. For double door garages, the middle post between openings needs to be at least 10 inches wide.
High garage ceiling: Some high lift garage door systems, such as vertical doors, require a minimum of 12 to 14 feet of clearance above the garage door opening to meet installation requirements. To get an exact measurement for the amount of clearance you may need, consult a garage door professional near you.
In general, standard sizes for door widths are 8', 9' 10', 12', 15', 16', 18' and 20'. Some door series may have exceptions to this rule. Check with your Overhead Door Door distributor about the availability of specific sizes or custom width doors.
There should be a 2mm or 3mm gap between the door and the frame on both sides and the top. If you do need to cut the door down to size, keep in mind that you need to cut all four sides of the door equally whenever possible to retain an accurate shape or pattern if the door is panelled.

Vertical Lift Tracks: These tracks lift the door straight up, providing maximum headroom and clearance. They are ideal for garage spaces with high ceilings, ample storage, and taller vehicle accommodation.
The barn door should be wide enough to completely cover the doorway with an inch or two of overhang on both sides and about one inch at the top.
A well fitted door should have a 2mm gap on either side and at the top. The gap at the bottom will depend on the thickness of your flooring/carpet. Plane the door as required, using an electric plane will help you get an even finish, and sand for a smooth finish.
Limitations in Design and Customizations
Some roll-up doors may not offer insulation properties, reducing energy efficiency options for customers. These limitations mean that certain architectural styles may not be compatible with roll-up doors, and customization options may be limited.
A standard, 7.5-foot, manually operated commercial roll up door needs at least fifteen inches of headroom. If the door has an automatic opener, it will require at least eighteen inches. Roll up doors also require a small amount of horizontal headroom, though nowhere near as much as sectional or overhead doors.
Coil coating and paint costs are key drivers in the price of your roll up door. Typically paint costs only increase due to the raw materials being utilized in other markets such as batteries and electric cars. Each of these markets utilize the same resins that are part of the ingredients to make paint.
An 8-foot-wide garage door is usually enough for most single cars. However, it may feel a bit tight for larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks.
Average Car Width
Compact vehicles tend to have a narrower design, while full-size vehicles, SUVs, and trucks are generally wider. The average car width is approximately 5.8 feet, although specific widths will vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle.
