Wedge anchors are considered one of the best concrete screws due to their exceptional strength. They consist of a threaded bolt with a wedge-shaped mechanism. As you tighten the nut, the wedge expands the anchor body, creating immense holding power.

In general, wedge anchors and drop-in anchors are the most popular choices for concrete anchor applications, due to their simplicity and effectiveness. Epoxy anchors are the strongest, but they are more expensive and time-consuming to install.
Wedge anchors are one of the strongest anchors available. They come in nine different diameters and several different lengths. The larger the anchor, the more holding power it has. They also come in several different materials, so you can use them in areas with or without the possibility of corrosion.
When are Epoxy Concrete Anchors used? Epoxy is ideal for passive dowels or anchors without sustained loading conditions; however, when high capacity anchors are to be prestressed, the designer should consider Williams Spin-Lock mechanical anchors. Use Williams epoxy anchors for concrete anchors loaded in shear.
Generally, anchor bolts should be embedded at least 7 inches deep in solid concrete. For heavier loads, a depth of 10 to 12 inches may be needed.
Wedge Anchor
Made of steel and one of the strongest types of concrete anchors (thus optimal for heavy-duty use), the wedge anchor is also one of the most popular choices. Named after its ability to wedge and expand into solid concrete, once you hammer a wedge anchor into place, rest assured it's there to stay.
Danforth, or fluke-style anchors, are the top choice for most recreational boats with overall lengths of 30' or less. Fluke anchors provide sufficient holding power considering their small size. By design, they fold flat and are easy to stow in storage compartments.
The strongest epoxy glue you can purchase is probably Systemthree's T-88.
If the base material is concrete, a drop in anchor may be used. Drop-in anchors are female type anchors that do not stick up above the surface of the concrete and allows for bolting and unbolting. A number of concrete anchors are designed for light duty anchoring to concrete, brick or block base material.
Strength: Wedge anchors are generally stronger than sleeve anchors and are better suited for heavy-duty applications. Installation: Sleeve anchors are easier to install than wedge anchors and require less drilling depth.
Inadequate edge distance can lead to various problems that negatively impact the performance and safety of wedge anchors. Some of the potential issues arising from insufficient edge distance include concrete cracking, reduced load capacity, and anchor failure.
Length – to determine the minimum length of Tapcon to use for any specific application add the minimum embedment depth of 1” to the thickness of the wood being attached. If a 2x4 is being used as a sleeper then add 1” to the 1-1/2” for a minimum length of 2-1/2”. The closest Tapcon length over the 2-1/2” is 2-3/4”.
1. Concrete fasteners should not be set closer than 10-anchor diameters from each other. 2. Mechanical type anchors should be set at a minimum of 5-anchor diameters from an unsupported edge.
The minimum depth of embedment for the Tapcon screw is 1 inch, and the maximum embedment is 1-3/4 inch. The depth of the hole should be drilled to allow a minimum space at the bottom of the hole of 1/2 inch. The minimum depth of the hole equals 1 inch plus 1/2 inch or 1-1/2” inches.
The hole must be drilled using a hammer drill with a carbide tipped bit meeting ANSI standards. A bit that meets ANSI standards will ensure that the hole diameter will meet the requirements of the Tapcon®.
The correct setting for driving a tapcon concrete screw without breaking or shearing off is determined by using the lightest setting and then moving up until the tapcon concrete screw is set tight against the fixture being fastened. It is very important that the tapcon is not over torqued.
