The "tastiest" tomato is subjective and can vary depending on individual preferences and culinary uses. Some popular tomato varieties known for their flavor include the Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, San Marzano, and Sun Gold. Each tomato variety has its unique taste profile, sweetness, acidity, and texture.
1> Brandywine: Known for its rich, sweet flavor and juicy texture, Brandywine tomatoes are a favorite among many tomato enthusiasts. 2> Cherokee Purple: Another heirloom variety, Cherokee Purple tomatoes have a complex, sweet flavor with a hint of smokiness, making them popular for salads and sandwiches.
Beefsteak tomatoes are the best option, ideally heirloom. Beefsteak tomatoes are generally the largest varieties you'll see in a store, so you can get nice, big slices. They also have a higher ratio of flesh to seeds than other tomato varieties, which is exactly what you want for a sandwich.
Go for heirloom varieties with interesting colors, patterns and shapes. Medium to large slicers and beefsteaks - like Brandywine or Cherokee purple - are great for eating fresh in sandwiches or tomato toasts or breakfasts or for soups. Plum or Roma tomatoes - like San Marzano - are good for fresh pasta sauces or soups.
If you're having a difficult time selecting one, the best type of tomato to use for your burger is the grape tomato. Tomatoes like beefsteak and heirloom are usually most people's go-to choices. They're not only delicious when fresh, but they're also huge, filling most if not all the circumference of the patty.
Orange & Yellow
Orange and yellow tomatoes are sweet and fruity. Often people who aren't tomato fans find that they do enjoy orange and yellow tomatoes, especially grape or cherry-sized varieties. Pop them in your mouth and enjoy the taste explosion!
'San Marzano'
Their sweet flavor, dense pulp, low acidity and low seed count make them ideal for homemade sauces and pizzas. The bright red skins are easy to peel.
When they're in season, I love dry-farmed tomatoes, which tend to have more intense flavor than irrigated tomatoes. Don't worry too much about size, as it's fine to cut up a bigger one and snack on the extra slices. If you're making two BLTs, one medium or large tomato will yield enough slices for both.
While Cento is the standout favorite, several chefs also recommended Bianco DiNapoli Whole Peeled Tomatoes. The brand has earned a loyal following among culinary professionals for its exceptional flavor and quality, but they're slightly more expensive and not as readily available.
Yellow Pear Cherry, Blush, Solar Gold, California Sungold (New!) Fox Cherry, and Chocolate Cherry, and Sweet Pea Currant Tomato (New!) are perfect for snacking straight off the vine.
Black Krim is one of the most flavorful heirloom beefsteak tomatoes, producing large, sweet, reddish-purple fruits that are beautifully mottled. The flesh has a rich, complex flavor with a hint of smokiness, making it perfect for salads, sauces, or slicing.
Water correctly: Do not overwater. The first week tomato plants are in the ground, they need water every day, but back off watering after the first week, slowly weaning the plants down to 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week.
'Gold Medal' (beefsteak, indeterminate, heirloom c. 1920) is arguably the top bicolor for taste. The giant 1-3 lb fruits are perfectly marbled with red and yellow and are large, meaty, and juicy. It has won lots of taste tests where it has been described as luscious and superb.
Heirloom tomatoes are very flavorful; Brandywine and Cherokee Purple are both heirloom beefsteak tomatoes lauded for their sweetness, juiciness and flavor.
Fresh tomatoes: Try to stick with plum tomatoes, like Roma, San Marzano, and cherry tomatoes. Be sure to peel the tomatoes (and remove the seeds, if you like, but it's not necessary). White sugar: The sugar will balance out the acidity and give the sauce a hint of sweetness.
Sungold. (Gold tomato.) According to Eden Bros, this is “Your new, favorite, super sweet cherry tomato.” I've grown Sungold before, and it is very sweet and beautiful.
Black, Brown, and Purple Tomatoes
These colors offer high levels of lycopene, vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium, so they are nutritionally complete in comparison to lighter colors. Black, brown, and purple tomatoes are also packed with flavor and often have a surprisingly sweet taste.
For fresh eating, vine-ripened large beefsteak and hybrid standard-size tomatoes are flavorful and good for slicing. Beefsteak tomatoes are especially large, and have smaller seed cavities than many other tomatoes, making them easier to slice.
