Proper Storage of Wire and Cable 1 In the storage of cables, contact with acids, alkalis, and mineral oils is strictly prohibited, to be stored in isolation from these corrosive substances. 2 Storage of cables in the warehouse must not have damage to insulation and corrosion of metal harmful gases exist.
Cable Storage
When storing your cables, try to keep them either hanging or laying in a relaxed position as much as possible. Cable ties come in very handy for keeping your cables neatly organized and separated, especially if you have them in a pile or gig bag.
Cables should be handled and stored with care. If not, it may lead to damaged or broken cable drums and may even cause visible damage to the surface or worse, damage deep inside the actual cable.
The best way to organize cables under desk is by using cable trays, adhesive clips, or zip ties to keep everything neatly secured. Effective solutions for messy cable management can also include under-desk cable sleeves or dedicated cable channels to prevent clutter and hazards.
How Deep Should I Bury This Stuff? Depending on the type of direct burial wire and application, there are various rules to prevent accidents. Underground Feeder (UF) cable must be buried at least 24 inches underground. Meanwhile, PVC conduit only has to be buried 12 inches underground.
UF cable can be direct-buried (without conduit) with a minimum of 24 inches of earth cover. Wiring buried inside rigid metal (RMC) or intermediate metal (IMC) conduit must have at least 6 inches of earth cover; wiring in PVC conduit must have at least 18 inches of cover.
Generally, a cable buried in the ground is required to incorporate an earthed armour or metallic sheath or both, suitable for use as a protective conductor. The location of a buried cable is also required to be marked by cable covers (see Figure 2) or a suitable marker tape (see Figure 1).
Store Unused Cables in a Shoe Rack
In garages, utility closets, and the like, use a hanging shoe rack to store your unused wires, cords, and cables. Each pouch is the perfect size for one wound length of cord you'd find in a home or small office.
Roll them up and secure them with a tie and label (so you know what cord is what) then use file folders or separators to keep them organized. This is an especially great system for the smaller power cords you still need but don't use as often.
Hide them underneath a rug
Running cords underneath a rug is a great, incredibly simple way to keep them out of sight. We recommend a little bit of electrical tape to keep them running snugly along the floor.
2. Roll up your cable - loosely. When you're storing your cable, don't bundle it up in a big tangle - knots are bad news - but don't roll it up too tightly either. Instead of winding the cable around your hand, hold one end and create loose circular coils.
A red stripe indicates flame retardant cable.
Requirements of Underground Cable
The cable must have a proper thickness of insulation to obtain proper safety and reliability. The cable must be provided with suitable mechanical protection so that it may withstand rough uses only.
End Caps: Insulated cables should always be stored with an air-tight seal to mitigate intrusions at the cable end. If any section of the cable is cut and removed during the storage period, the cable ends need to be sealed again with a heat-sealable end cap or a cold shrink to prevent water from entering.
Unplug your extension cords when they're not being used.
Did you know that extension cords continue to use energy while they're plugged in? If there is a short, the extension cord can overheat. It's best to unplug the extension cord while it isn't in use. This is considered an electrical safety best practice.
Do not overload cords with more than the proper electrical load. Do not run extension cords through doorways, holes in ceilings, walls, or floors. Do not move, bend, or modify any of the extension cord plug's metal parts. Do not daisy chain, or connect, multiple power strips together.
Untangle and sort your cables into matching piles. Use cable ties or rubber bands to roll them up neatly. Place your cords into boxes labeled by type. I repurposed old circular plastic takeout containers, as they are the right shape for coiled up cables.
Bottom line, unplug cables when not in use. Not only can that prevent these sorts of unexpected power draws, but it also reduces the chances of the ports or connectors suffering accidental damage.

Typical sizes of wires for 100 Amp Service are 4 AWG or 2 AWG for copper wiring and 2 AWG, 1 AWG, or 1/0 AWG for aluminum or copper-clad wiring.
As a general rule, a 12/2 wire with a load of 20 amps can be as long as 57 feet before it loses too much voltage to be effective. This is because voltage is lost along the wire the longer the wire is, so length does matter a great deal.
