1.4. 2. ❖ Footings are required to extend below the ground surface a minimum of 12 inches (305 mm). This is considered a minimum depth to protect the footing from movement of the soil caused by freezing and thawing in mild climate areas.
All foundations shall extend to a depth of at least 50 cm below the natural ground level. The minimum depth of footing on sandy soil is 0.8 - 1 m, for rocky soil, it is 0.05 - 0.5 m and for clayey soil, it is 0.9 - 1.6 m. The minimum depth of foundation for the load-bearing wall is 900 mm.
Foundation walls shall extend at least 8" above the finished grade adjacent to the foundation at all points. See Figure 5-1. Wall Footing Thickness. For masonry or concrete construction, the minimum foundation wall will be 6 inches.
Generally, the concrete slab should be up to 8 to 12 inches thick. Likewise, it must be 2 feet wide or more to accommodate the footings. If the ground freezes (or could), the footings should be 12 or more inches beneath the frost line.
The minimum depth of footings below the surface of undisturbed soil, compacted fill material or controlled low strength material (CLSM) shall be 12 inches (305 mm).
The grade shall fall not fewer than 6 inches (152 mm) within the first 10 feet (3048 mm).
Depth of Footings
Footings should extend to a minimum depth of 12 inches below previously undisturbed soil. Footings must also extend at least 12 inches below the frost line (the depth to which the ground freezes in winter) or be frost-protected.
For interior, R403. 1.3. 4 requires top of slab to bottom of footing to be 12" minimum, which seems to imply that that is what they consider to be the footing depth/thickness.
A pad foundation is generally straight and simple. It usually has an even thickness between 600mm and 2m deep. This process provides more structural strength to the weak soil underneath. Pads with a sloped surface can also be used if they work better with the building.
For every 2 feet of adjustment to the width of the house, add or subtract 2 inches of footing width and 1 inch of footing thickness (but not less than 6 inches thick).
A typical foundation wall minimum thickness of eight inches applies to walls eight feet or less with no more than seven feet of soil pressing against it. Foundation walls taller than eight feet with more than seven feet of soil pressing against it requires a larger foundation wall 10 to 12 inches in width.
Maintain the reveal. Make sure the top of the foundation is a minimum of 8 inches above grade. This prevents the exterior finish from absorbing groundwater, and it's key to the overall strategy of protecting the home from bulk-water intrusion.
A slab-on-grade foundation - is a structural engineering system where the foundation for a building (concrete slab) is created from a mold set into the ground. Concrete is then poured into the mold, leaving the concrete slabs lying directly on the ground over a prepared surface.
The minimum depth of footings below the undisturbed ground surface shall be 12 inches (305 mm). Where applicable, the requirements of Section 1809.5 shall be satisfied. The minimum width of footings shall be 12 inches (305 mm).
The critical depth is defined as the depth below which the shaft resistance of driven piles does not change; above this depth, the shaft resistance increases with depth reaching to its maximum value at the critical depth.

It can also be used for drainage works and blinding house floors, as well as pad foundations and non-structural mass concrete in non-aggressive ground conditions.
There should be at least 3mm of pad visible. If you see anything less, get the brake pads inspected.
The depth of the excavation will depend on the size of the slab and the type of soil you are working with. A general rule of thumb is to excavate to a depth of 6 inches.
It is important to note that IS 456 mandates that the minimum grade of concrete has to be M20 for RCC structures and buildings. Though some of the lower grades and its strength can be achieved by volume batching, it has to be designed.
Standard concrete floor slab thickness in residential construction is 4 inches. Five to six inches is recommended if the concrete will receive occasional heavy loads, such as motor homes or garbage trucks.
While there are many factors at play, a common rule of thumb for foundation depth is to go as deep as the width of the foundation wall. For instance, if your foundation wall is 8 inches wide, a depth of 8 inches is a starting point.
The footing depth, on the other hand, is typically determined by the soil type and the extent to which you must dig before striking undisturbed soil. Still, we recommend that the depth of the footing extends to a minimum of 12 inches after you've hit undisturbed soil.
Footing must be dug down into undisturbed soil and to a minimum depth of 12-in below the finished grade.
