How thick is carpet underlay. Carpet underlays between 6-8mm are typically cost effective options that offer the basic support your carpet needs to look its best, along with a comfortable sensation underfoot. Being thinner means they are lighter in weight and therefore easier to install, making fitting simple.
So generally speaking 7mm is about as thin as you want to go unless you have a specialist need for something thinner, but 8-12mm is the band most manufacturers produce carpet underlay with and its perfect for any room and any carpet.
Most carpets call for 7/16-inch padding. Choose stiff, stable padding with a thickness of 3/8-inch or less for a low-pile carpet. This includes Berbers, loop pattern carpets and commercial options. Tip: Carpet padding should be replaced when new carpet is installed.
The 8mm carpet underlay is also suitable if you're looking for carpet underlay that lasts, it will enable you to maintain the quality of your carpet for longer, reducing the need to replace it. 8mm carpet underlay also works great for stairs as they fit flush with the carpet grippers.
Light Traffic: Areas that have small amounts of traffic or where the carpet is replaced frequently, like apartments, should use carpet pads with a density rating of 5 to 6 pounds. Average Traffic: Most carpeted residential areas require a carpet pad with a 6- to 8-pound density rating.
The lighter density pad, 4 or 6lb will be cushy but not withstand traffic for years to come. And on the opposite spectrum, a 10lb will be durable but is very firm underfoot. The 8lb, 7/16” rebond pad is our most popular pad. It is a fantastic value, performs well and is very comfortable!
Synthetic Fiber Carpet Pads: These pads are suitable for areas with heavy foot traffic, like commercial spaces. They provide extreme durability and stand up well to wear. Memory Foam Carpet Pads: Similar to memory foam mattresses, these pads are incredibly soft and comfortable.
For a typical home we'd recommend a density rating above 100 kg/m³. This will ensure your underlay outlasts your carpet but still provides that comfortable, plush feeling when walking on it.
Good quality underlay will prevent premature wearing and keep your floor looking new for longer. As the underlay acts as a shock absorber, your flooring or carpet will sit better and take more wear. The best type of carpet underlay will reduce your energy bills as it will keep the heat in your room.

The best type of carpet padding keeps the backing on the bottom of the carpet safe and also increases its longevity. It also adds cushioning and contributes to noise reduction, insulation, and stability.
Medium pile – 7mm to 13mm
Medium pile carpets are the Goldilocks of the carpet world. Being able to be soft and hardwearing.
The short answer is that doubling up on underlay is not recommended and, in fact, can cause more harm than good. But before we dive into why you should avoid multiple layers, let's explore what an underlay is and the critical role it plays in the flooring installation process.
The reason they probably want you to use their 1.5mm thick underlay, is because their planks may only be stable on something 1.5mm thick or under. You have potential of voiding your warranty by using anything else. The 3mm pad may be too much give for the floor and cause failures.
Carpet pads come in three thickness sizes: 1/4” for a low-profile cushion, 3/8” for a medium profile, and 1/2” for a high profile. The thicker the carpet pad, the softer it will feel. But while the thickness of your carpet padding is important, it's really the density that will matter most in the end.
A high-quality PU foam underlay is an excellent choice, as it offers superior cushioning, creating a soft and luxurious feel underfoot. It also provides brilliant insulation, keeping your living room warm and comfortable, especially during colder months.
Expensive carpets look and feel more luxurious underfoot. The quality of the fibres and materials used is higher. They are and they will last longer and wear better. In comparison a budget carpet will look and feel lower quality, and it will wear and need replaced sooner.
How often should you replace carpet underlay. Although a typical carpet underlay will last somewhere between 10 and 25 years, we would always recommend installing new underlay every time you replace your carpets.
Underlay per square meter should cost you between £3 and £8 per square meter, including delivery. The actual price per square metre depends on a number of variables, but you should expect to see prices per square meter of underlay that range between £3 and £8.
So, when deciding which carpet underlay – rubber or foam – remember that rubber will last longer, and offer greater impact resistance, but PU foam will be softer, warmer, quieter, and cheaper.
For new flooring in a lounge, living space or bedroom, we typically recommend a carpet underlay at the top end of the thickness scale – around the 12mm mark. Such 'thick' underlays are regarded as the gold standard for domestic projects.
A 7mm standard quality foam underlay would be considered a budget price option, whereas a high density 8mm to 12mm would be regarded as a good option to give great support to your new carpet.
The lower the weight of the padding, the softer or “cushier” the carpet will be, hence a 6 pound carpet padding will feel notably more cushioned than a carpet with an 8 pound padding. Likewise, a denser carpet padding results in a more stiff surface to walk on.
