Vascular wilt diseases are caused by ascomycete fungi, nematodes, bacteria, and phytoplasmas. A large number of these disease agents are carried by insects and some are soilborne. Vascular wilt diseases tend not be caused by pathogens typically dispersed in water or via airborne inoculum.

DISEASE MANAGEMENT
Verticillium wilt disease cannot be cured, but the life of trees showing mild symptoms can possibly be prolonged with proper tree care: Prune and destroy symptomatic twigs and branches. Sanitize pruners between cuts with a commercial sanitizer, 10% Lysol disinfectant, 10% bleach, or rubbing alcohol.
Practice crop rotation: Verticillium wilt can persist in the soil for several years, so it's important to rotate crops and avoid planting susceptible plants in the same location for several years. For example, avoid planting tomatoes or potatoes in the same location for at least three years.

Symptoms of verticillium wilt can be confusing because they are so variable. They include marginal scorch and complete wilting of leaves on individual branches in the crowns of potential hosts. Symptoms can occur at any time of the year but often show up when hot, dry weather begins.

Verticillium wilt may kill a small tree in one season, but larger trees may take several years to die or may recover completely. Several strains of Verticillium albo-atrum exist; some are more virulent than others. If a tree is affected over several successive years, it may not die but will be very stunted in growth.

Survival of disease
The wilt bacterium is able to survive for periods up to 2 to 3 years in bare fallow soils, and for longer periods in soils cropped to non-solanaceous crops.
Wilting isn't always a sign your plant is unhappy, if you're seeing a few wilted leaves near the bottom of the plant it probably just means they've completed their lifecycle.
