Most deadbolts use a cylinder lock. In the cylinder lock, the key turns a cylinder, or plug, which turns an attached cam. When the plug is turned one way, the cam pulls in on the bolt and the door can open.
To lock your unit, with the key in the cylinder lock, put it in the opening flat end down and turn until the keyhole is in the three o'clock position, then remove the key. In place, a cylinder lock resembles a regular door lock. They cost about as much as disc locks and are very secure.
The lock cylinder (or key cylinder) is the body of the lock where you insert a key and adjust the lock pins before you engage or disengage the lock. When you unlock your front door, you turn the key inside of the lock cylinder.
The lock must be able to withstand attacks with brute force, whilst the cylinder must be able to also cope with the various techniques such as lock picking or key bumping.
Furniture – electronic locks are often used in office 'hot desking' environments or personal or temporary storage for employees' belongings. Items such as wooden office furniture, filing cabinets and metal office furniture should be equipped with a secure locking system where privacy or security is necessary.
Are electronic door locks safer than keyed door locks? Definitely not, but they are just as safe as keyed locks, and if a person is tech-savvy and wants ease of access instead of having to search around on their person for the keys to their home door, an electronic door lock is most definitely a good idea.
Deadbolt door locks are the most secure type of key lock and are usually used on a home's exterior door. Available in single- and double-cylinder styles, deadbolts are rated according to their strength from Grade 1 to Grade 3. A Grade 1 is the highest grade and provides the most security.
The second type of cylindrical lock is the deadbolt lock. Deadbolt is a thick circular metal that's typically 1.5-2 inches long and goes inside the striker plate at a much deeper length than the latch lock.
While the single-cylinder deadbolt only features a locking mechanism requiring a key on one side, the double-cylinder deadbolt has it on both. This means that a key will be required to turn the lock both on the inside of the door and the outside. This is the main difference between these two types of deadbolts.
The Key Won't Turn
If your key doesn't turn in the lock, the problem may just be a poorly cut key. Test the lock with a key that was cut at a different time to be sure. If the key isn't the problem, try lubricating the lock using powdered graphite or a silicone-based lubricant.
Use a small screwdriver or thin tool on interior doors.
Push an eyeglasses screwdriver, a paper clip hammered flat, or a very small butter knife into this hole. Push it straight through as far as you can, and turn or twist it until it catches a groove and the lock clicks open.
In the U.S., there is no single comprehensive law against dual-cylinder deadbolts. Individual cities and states have local property and fire codes that may prohibit the use of dual-cylinder deadbolts. The code may prohibit the use of dual-cylinder deadbolts in some buildings and allow them in others.
Mortise locks are one of the most secure forms of residential hardware available today. What makes mortise locks so much more secure than their cylinder counterparts? A pocket cut into the short edge of the door, allows a longer and thicker mortise box to slide into the door itself, providing superior protection.
A mortise refers to the pocket cut into the door where the lock is fitted. Therefore, a mortise lockset cannot be installed on just any door. They are great for replacing the hardware on homes built before 1950.
ABUS Granit™: one of the world's most secure padlocks with a tensile resistance of over six tonnes. Granit locks have a tensile resistance of over six tonnes, making it almost impossible for attackers to release the shackle from the lock body by force.
Smart locks can be hacked. With any wireless technology, hacking is a risk and smart locks are no exception. However, if they are installed correctly, their software is kept up to date and you keep your passwords safe, then they are extremely difficult to hack.
