Step Two: Install drip edges on the eaves first. Place the drip edge down, aligning it so water will drip into the gutters.
This type is usually installed over bare wood sheathing or sheathing that has been painted with a primer. You can better protect the sheathing against condensation and leaking by applying roofing felt first. Then, you can install the roll roofing over the felt.
Step One: Install your underlayment completely and your shingles up to where the wall begins, so that the first piece of flashing, or the corner flashing, will rest on a shingle.
The first layer of any roof is the framing. This is what gives the roof its shape and is the foundation for the rest of the materials. The framing is made up of trusses that support the weight of all the roofing materials-- their triangular shape helps support and distribute the weight.
Per GAF, drip edge should be installed first under underlayment and WeatherWatch ice & water shield.
Step Seven: Once you've covered the eaves with a drip edge, it's time to install your underlayment. This way, the underlayment is over the drip edge on the eaves, but under the drip edge on the rakes.
The drip edge shall extend back on the roof a minimum of 2 inches (51 mm). Underlayment shall be installed over drip edges along eaves. Drip edges shall be installed over underlayment along rake edges. Drip edges shall be mechanically fastened a maximum of 12 inches (305 mm) on center.
These roof layers work as a system to keep water out and keep your home a consistent temperature. New asphalt shingle roofs will be installed in the following order: decking, ice/water barrier, flashing, underlayment, starter strip, shingles, and finally, ridge caps.
However, a proper eave installation sequence typically starts with structural elements such as rafters (8) and fascia boards (6), followed by protective underlayers like sheathing (9) and roofing felt (11), before moving on to roofing materials (13), drip edge (12), soffit installation (10), and trim (14).
Step 1: Tearing off the old roof
The first step in installing a new roof is to tear off the old one. This involves removing all the old shingles, as well as any other materials on the roof, such as flashing, underlayment, and nails.
Headwall flashing should extend up behind the exterior wall covering and down over the roof-covering material, as you see here. This is true no matter what type of roof-covering material is installed.
2.8. 5 Drip Edge says, “Underlayment shall be installed over the drip edge along eaves ... .” Because the ice-barrier membrane in this situation is taking the place of the underlayment along the eaves edge, it should be installed over the drip edge according to the code.
Shingles should be installed over the drip edge a minimum of 3/8” (9 mm) at both the eave edge and the rake edge. If the drip edge extends… out from the rakes and eaves (typically called DL Style or D Type), the shingles may be installed flush with the drip edge.
Yet, most roofing contractors use it and many area building codes require it.
With a properly installed drip edge, water is directed into the gutter, not down the side, which ruins the fascia. If your fascia is already ruined and needs to be repaired, be sure to get a drip edge installed before you damage newly-installed boards.
Roofing underlay provides an added layer of protection against water damage and moisture in rougher weather conditions where the upper layers can be lifted or broken off in high winds.
Step 1: Choosing the Right Roofing Materials
They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, making them a popular choice for homeowners on a budget. Asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors and styles, so you can find a look that matches your home's exterior.
Ideally, soffit and fascia materials should be installed before you place tiles or any other type of roofing material on the roof.
A roofing work order (also called a job order, service ticket, or work request) is a written record describing a roofing job that's been approved by a client, but hasn't been started yet. • Job number, start date, and end date. • Your roofing business name, address, and contact information.
Once you've determined that you need a roof replacement, you can start planning for it. The biggest thing to plan for is the cost. Be prepared to spend at least $8,000 – but depending on materials and labor, for a 2,200 square foot home it can end up costing upwards of $30,000.
The first layer of your roof will always be your roof decking (also known as roof sheathing). Roof decking is the wooden boards (plywood or planks) that make up the framing of your roof. I like to say it's the foundation for the rest of your roofing materials and components to be installed on.
Controversial answer: doesn't really matter. Over the drip edge is better - in the sense that it preserves the drainage plane better. But typically, for a re-roof, the underlay will drain onto the fascia regardless.
Unroll the base sheet of the roofing material over the surface. It should overhang the drip edges by around 1/4 inch (6 millimeters).
(The drip edge will be installed over the ice and water protector and other underlayments at roof rake edges.) You should install ice and water protector before other underlayments, including roof felt. Around roof features like dormers and chimneys, you should place ice and water protector below flashing.
