The inlet or top hose feeds the coolant from your engine to your radiator after it been through your engine block and is now hot. Conversely, the outlet or bottom hose feeds the now cool again coolant back into your engine from your radiator.
On a TRV, the number on the wheelhead control will dictate how warm the room must be before the valve closes. The higher the number, the higher the temperature must be before it shuts off. It is also important to remember that a higher number does not mean the radiator will heat up faster.
As a rule of thumb, the asterisk (*) on your TRV sets the temperature around 5℃ (41℉) and helps to protect your radiator against frost damage. A turn up to position 1 is around 12℃ (54℉), number 2 16℃ (61℉), position 3 20℃ (68℉), 4 at around 24℃ (75℉) and the top setting of 5 is about 28℃ (82℉).
Always replace the cap with the same pressure rating as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Each additional pound of pressure above the specified pressure increases the boiling point of the coolant by 1.4°C or 2.5°F. Generally caps are designed from 4PSI (30kPa) to 30PSI (205kPa).
