Borax, ammonia, trisodium phosphate, and washing soda (sodium carbonate) are some of the additives used to soften hard water for laundry on a small scale. Homemade hard water softeners – such as vinegar – are also sometimes used as the hard water laundry solution.
As a Water Softener
Add 1/4 box of baking soda to each load of laundry to soften the water. If you have a water softener, baking soda is unnecessary.
For most fabrics that can be washed in the washing machine, you can use vinegar during the rinse cycle periodically to soften and reduce mineral build up. Simply add up to ½ cup of white distilled vinegar where you would normally add fabric softener. Don't worry! Your clothes won't come out smelling like vinegar!
Soften your kitchen water by boiling: Boiling will make the salts in water sink to the bottom of the boiler. You can then scoop out this water or pour the water in another pot leaving the deposits in the end. Install an ion-exchange filter to your kitchen faucet or use a water pitcher filter.
The permanent hardness of water can be removed by adding washing soda or sodium carbonate. During this process, the sulfates and chlorides of magnesium and calcium are converted into their respective carbonates. These carbonates are insoluble and can be removed by the filtration process to obtain soft water.
The most effective way to address hard water is with a water softener. Water is softened when calcium and magnesium—the hardness ions—are collected by tiny resin beads through a process called ion exchange. The resin beads are charged with sodium or potassium ions.
For softening laundry water, it is best to use distilled white vinegar. Other types of vinegar may stain or discolor your fabrics, dishes, and dishwasher. Using inexpensive distilled white vinegar for laundry will whiten, brighten, reduce odor, and soften clothes without typical harsh chemicals.
Vinegar makes a perfect fragrance-free fabric softener and works well for hard water. To use vinegar as a fabric softener and static reducer: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of your washing machine.
Hard water can also damage your gasket and funnels. As the mineral deposits build-up, it can cause your machine to malfunction and overdry your clothes. In the end, this can cause rusting of the metal parts. If you're already having a problem, you may want to try a cleaning product made for washing machines.
All you'll need is one cup of white vinegar and one cup of baking soda. You'll be using these two ingredients separately, as using them together will only cancel out the effectiveness of each one, during two washes on the same load of towels.
Naturally lower your aquarium hardness by soaking dechlorinated tap water in peat moss, Indian almond leaves or driftwood. A more precise method would be to dilute tap water with reverse osmosis (RO) or distilled water or to use remineralized RO water.
