The common parts of a stove include a control panel, knobs, oven, oven door, oven racks, drip pan, warming drawers and cooktop elements that make dinnertime a breeze.
The UK term is hob, but this term is basically unknown in North America, where it is called a burner or cooking/heating element as others have noted.
The small metal part that the flame comes out of is called the “Burner”. The metal part on top of that, onto which you place a pot or pan for cooking, is called the “Grate”. Fireplaces have grates also, but they are shaped differently, and instead of holding a pot or pan, they hold the logs.
A sheet pan, also referred to as baking tray, baking sheet, or baking pan, is a flat, rectangular metal pan placed in an oven and used for baking pastries such as bread rolls, cookies, sheet cakes, Swiss rolls, and pizzas. A baker places a hot sheet pan full of bread rolls onto a cooling rack.
Electric stoves have burner coils and drip bowls or a ceramic-glass surface with radiant heating and metal coils underneath. These stove parts heat up quickly and are great for bringing a pot to boil.
The broil element is typically found at the top of the oven cavity and provides direct heat to the top of food for broiling.
A kitchen hood, exhaust hood, hood fan, extractor hood, or range hood is a device containing a mechanical fan that hangs above the stove or cooktop in the kitchen. It removes airborne grease, combustion products, fumes, smoke, heat, and steam from the air by evacuation of the air and filtration.
by Nick Gromicko, CMI® and Kenton Shepard. Anti-tip brackets are metal devices designed to prevent freestanding ranges from tipping. They are normally attached to a rear leg of the range or screwed into the wall behind the range, and are included in all installation kits.
A range consists of both an oven and a stovetop, while the term “oven” simply refers to the enclosed space in a range where you can bake, broil and roast food. Ovens are also available as individual appliances built into cabinets, like these wall ovens from KitchenAid brand.
Situated at the top of your oven, the broil element generates high temperatures to broil the top of your food. This element is useful when cooking thin meats like fish or chicken.
A cooktop, or stovetop, is a standalone appliance that installs directly into your countertop. Cooktops look like the stovetop on a range but are separate from the oven. A range, on the other hand, includes both an oven and a cooktop in one appliance.
All About the Pot Filler
A pot filler faucet, also known as a pasta arm or kettle faucet, is a separate kitchen faucet style installed near a stovetop or range. The kettle faucet mounted over a stove swings out, extending on a long, jointed arm. The faucet can be used to fill pots with water directly over the stove.
Grates are stove parts that sit above burners. A cooktop's grates distribute and dissipate heat evenly below the pan. In the case of a gas oven, grates are made of cast iron. For electric or smooth surface gas cooking surfaces, such as induction stovetops, grates are ceramic-glass.
Range hoods are installed over your stove to draw unpleasant air through a filter and disperse it. Ventilate and clean your kitchen air with range hoods from The Home Depot. We carry a wide selection of range hoods in several styles and sizes.
If you have an electric cooktop, range hoods should typically be 20–24 inches above the heat source. For gas cooktops, your range hood should be around 24–30 inches above the stove. Range hoods are a great way to complement your cooktop or range and can help clear the air while you cook.
The most apparent signs the heating element is broken are visible damages. Take time to check your oven and remove the heating element to inspect it thoroughly. While you're at it, be on the lookout for burns, blistering, or cracks. If you notice one or some of these signs, it's time to have it replaced.
Extra dish towels, oven mitts, oven cleaners, aprons, recipe cards, and cooking timers are all cooking items you would need for your oven that should be stored above the stove.
Ovens typically have two elements: one at the top for broiling, and one at the bottom for baking. The baking element usually has metal feet and simply rests on the oven floor. It connects to the back wall of the oven with a plate or bracket held by a couple of screws.
Commonly called rings or burners, coils are fashioned from spiral steel tubes housing a heating element. Anything placed on these coils is heated directly. Stove dials control temperature by adjusting the resistance levels in the heating element — more resistance means higher heat.
How do I clean cast iron stove grates? If your cast iron grates are seasoned, place them in the sink and soak in soapy water for 20 minutes. After they are done soaking, wipe the grates clean and thoroughly dry before placing them back on your stove.
