If the temperatures are below freezing all winter, it is unlikely you will need to water your plants. In freezing temperatures your plants would not be able to benefit from watering because the ground would be frozen and any water would just run off or freeze rather than being absorbed by the plant's roots.
Avoid watering when temperatures are below 40°F or when sustained freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours as this water will freeze and not be available to the plants. Evergreen foliage can also be protected from excess water loss using anti-desiccant sprays. These sprays are sold at most garden centers.
Many tropical plants cannot survive temperatures below 40 degrees. If you cannot move your pots (with annual or perennial plants), or you have tender plants in the ground, cover your plants. The idea behind covering plants is to trap the heat from the soil and keep the cold air out.
Watering your plants before a freeze is a crucial step in protecting them from the harsh cold. When the temperature drops below freezing, it dehydrates the plant. Watering just before a freeze creates greater warmth in the soil, as the saturated soil will lose this heat slowly as the temperature drops.
The evening
Don't do that. Evenings are best avoided because of evaporation and transpiration (I think of transpiration like a plant breathing). Around 99% of water a plant takes up does NOT stay in the plant. Tiny pore-like holes on leaves, called stomata, take in carbon dioxide and 'breathe out' oxygen and water.
This depends on the plant types, garden light conditions, and weather. Plants in shaded areas may last longer without water compared to those in full sun. Container and window box plants can dry out in a day, whereas many houseplants can manage with one watering per week or less.
The best way to tell if your plants need water is to stick your finger about an inch into the potting mix—if it feels dry, break out the watering can. If you detect dampness, check back again in a day or two. For smaller houseplants, you can also pick up the whole container. If it feels light for its size, add water.
Freeze Warning - This is issued when there is at least an 80% chance that the temperature will hit 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Light freeze - 29° to 32° Fahrenheit will kill tender plants.
The root of the trick's protection is a concept called "latent heat of fusion." When the water on the plant starts to freeze, it releases heat (a necessary process to turn water into ice), and that heat helps protect the plant.
General Watering Timeline: If you haven't received precipitation in winter, it's crucial to water your plants. With dry weather, once a month winter watering is suggested. If the dry weather continues, you may need to go to twice-monthly watering.
On a cellular level, this means that as the water turns to ice, it expands, rupturing the cell wall. This is permanent damage, but it doesn't mean the plant will die. If the damage is isolated to a portion of the plant, it can be revived and recover.
One of the first signs plants are too cold is the wilting or drooping of leaves. Normally resilient and perky, leaves that begin to droop or wilt can indicate that the plant is unable to properly regulate water within its tissues.
Cucumbers are heat-sensitive and do best in temperatures between 60-90°F (16-32°C). They can tolerate some heat but will become stressed if temperatures exceed 95°F (35°C). Cucumbers can also be damaged by frost and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
How often you water your plants will depend on the plant itself. Some may need watering every few days, others will need to be watered once or twice a week and some plants who prefer a dry climate can get away with being watered just once a month.
With each year's winter setting new records for extreme temperatures and unusually late cold snaps, many farmers who have never previously considered frost protection are exploring their options. Spraying your plants with a steady stream of overhead water is a well-tested and proven way to prevent frost damage.
When watering your plants, it is essential to use water at the right temperature. This is because the roots of your plants are very sensitive to extremes of temperature. Using water that is too hot or too cold can put your plant under stress and cause damage.
Chlorine and fluoride
Chlorine added to drinking water does not harm most plants but some may develop brown leaf tips over an extended period of use. If desired, to remove chlorine from tap water let it sit in an open-top bucket for 24 hours to allow the chlorine to evaporate before using it to water plants.
Cover Plants – Protect plants from all but the hardest freeze (28°F for five hours) by covering them with sheets, towels, blankets, cardboard or a tarp. You can also invert baskets, coolers or any container with a solid bottom over plants. Cover plants before dark to trap warmer air.
If it is not going to rain before the freezing temperatures arrive, you should water plants thoroughly. This is because moist ground stays warmer than dry ground. Watering the night before the freeze arrives will insulate the root structure of the grass and plants, decreasing the potential for cold injury.
As a rule of thumb, water when the soil is dry to the touch, the temperature is not below 40 degrees F. (4 C.) and, if possible, when the wind isn't blowing. Drying winds may carry off much of the water you're trying to apply to the roots of your beloved plants.
Plants native to the subtropics are in danger below 40 degrees F and pretty certainly going to be killed at 32 degrees F. Plants native to the tropics are often damaged below 50 degrees F and perish at about 40 degrees F.
If you're looking for tips for protecting your plants from frost, avoid using garbage bags as plant covers. Trash bags are not the best protection against frost damage, primarily due to their material. Most garbage bags are made out of low-density polyethylene plastic.
“Most plants will typically be fine if you're gone a week, but some may start to suffer if they go without water for two weeks,” says Justin Hancock, Costa Farms horticulturist.
Leaves Turning Bright Yellow or Mushy Stems
This is usually a sign of overwatering, either caused by watering your plant before it's ready or if your plant is in too low of light. When plants sit in waterlogged soil, their roots can't get enough oxygen, leading to root damage which manifests as yellow leaves.
