Bit late but Inaturalist is my go to both for identifying moths that I and others find.

In terms of appearance, butterflies are colorful, have a hard chrysalis, and thin bodies; while moths are duller (more earthy hues), have a silky cocoon, and thick bodies. Cocoons and chrysalises are both protective coverings for insects' pupal stages, but differ in structure.

Moth flies are approximately 1/8 of an inch in length, with their entire body and wings covered in tiny hairs, giving them a moth-like appearance. Most species are black, but at least one commonly encountered species is mousy brown.
