Cats can be good for controlling mice, but they're opportunistic predators that may or may not be mousers. Many cats take up a laissez faire attitude toward the presence of mice, especially as they age. Dogs, on the other hand, can be just as fierce as cats toward mice.
Owls and hawks
Owls, hawks, eagles and other raptors are nature's rodent control experts. These nocturnal predators use their keen vision and stealth to hunt. Both farmers and homeowners benefit from having resident raptor populations because they hunt mice, rats, voles and other mammals.
Barn owls are particularly efficient mice predators. A single family of these owls can consume more than a dozen mice in one night. House mice usually live only one year in the wild due to predators and exposure to unfriendly environments. In captivity, mice may live up to three years.
As for my own family, we tried a few different types of traps during our infestation, including the humane ones, glue traps (which I wouldn't recommend due to the painful experience that both you and the mouse will experience when it comes time for disposal), and snap traps. Snap traps were the clear winner.
Mouse traps are fine if you are dealing with a few rodents but if there is a major infestation you need some heavy artillery such as bobcat pee. Mice, rats, rabbits and moles fear bobcats and for a very good reason.
Mouse traps are one of the most effective ways to get rid of mice that have taken up residence inside your home. Place mouse traps in the more vulnerable areas of your house, like along walls and behind trash cans. ⚠️ Due to the inhumane killing method of sticky or glue mouse traps, we do not recommend them.
What is the most effective mice repellent? In our experience, the most effective mice repellent is the Rodents Away Odor Free Pouches. But if you're looking for the easiest DIY treatment to use, you can go the ultrasonic pest repellers route with the LONAOO ultrasonic repeller.
Traps – Snap or box traps are useful in eliminating rodents. Rats are more distrustful of anything new in their environment and it may take 4-5 days before they are used to the traps. Live traps are good to use near runways used by mice and rats.
A barn cat that is a good hunter can catch six mice per day, providing you with natural and efficient rodent control. However, cats also can reproduce quickly and often. One unspayed female cat can be responsible for 67 descendants within only two years.
To discourage mice, remove all food sources by storing grains, pet food, and other dry goods in metal containers. Make sure mice won't find nesting material by storing all soft, fluffy material like fabric, rugs and blankets in heavy plastic or metal boxes.
Sounds That Repel Mice
High-pitched noises may affect rodents, but research has shown the effects are often overcome within a day or so because the rodents adapt to the sounds, regardless of whether the frequency is variable, intermittent, or random.
House mice are eaten by a wide variety of small predators throughout the world, including cats, foxes, weasels, ferrets, mongooses, large lizards, snakes, hawks, falcons, and owls.
The best way to get rid of rats or mice is by using traps. If using spring loaded traps for rats, bait three of them in a row without setting them. Bait with dried fruit, peanut butter mixed with oats, or cheese.
The strong scent of peppermint is overwhelming to mice. Similarly, essential oils such as eucalyptus oil, bergamot oil, clove oil, and cinnamon oil are potent in keeping mice at bay. One study noted that eucalyptus oil applied once a day was more effective as a rat repellant than once a week.
Grapes, raisins, rhubarb and walnuts are poisonous to mice and lettuce can cause them to have diarrhoea. Wild mice find food by foraging and so a portion of daily food that is provided for pet mice should be scattered in a cage to encourage this foraging behaviour.
Despite popular belief, mothballs are not an effective solution for deterring mice. While these pesticide products contain strong smelling substances like naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, their efficacy against rodents is minimal at best.
Irish Spring soap is not likely to keep mice away from your house– and the strong fragrances could even be attractive to them. Rats & mice might initially be deterred by the overwhelming odor, but after a while they'll get used to it, and may even take a nibble to test it as food.
Do Dryer Sheets Keep Mice Out? While some people believe the strong scent may deter mice, dryer sheets are not considered a reliable or long-term solution. Other proven methods like sealing entry points and professional rodent control services are recommended for better results.
Zinc phosphide is an acute toxicant that causes the death of a house mouse within several hours after a lethal dose is ingested. It appears to be the fastest way of getting rid of mice by reducing their population.
Staff at PaulB Hardware in Lititz, which serves a large agricultural customer base, recommends a product called Fresh Cab. It can repel rodents for up to 3 months, by using a smell that would be extremely offensive to pests, but smells like air freshener to humans.
Signs of an Infestation
A much more likely scenario is that you're already too late. Spotting one elusive mouse typically means there are at least five or six hiding out in your walls, basement, or attic. This is particularly true if you see a mouse at night or in a low-traffic area of your home.
