Daylilies can be planted very successfully at any time the ground can be worked — spring, summer or fall.
When to Plant Daylilies. Plant daylilies in the late spring or early fall for best results. However, if you find a plant that you simply must have during a summer sale, bring it home and plant it immediately. Just keep an eye on it and water frequently during the first few weeks.
Transplant daylilies any time of the growing season. Many people choose to transplant during the spring or early fall, allowing the plants ample time to establish themselves before the next blooming season. Daylilies are able to withstand being divided during the heat of summer.
Daylilies grown from seed take two to three years to produce flowers, while daylilies propagated from split roots will begin flowering in the same year they're planted. Daylily bare roots should be planted in spring, to allow them to build a root system before the harsh winter months.
The earlier in the season you plant, the more likely it is that they will bloom. (Of course, you need to wait until most chances of freeze have passed, so that limits how early some of you can plant.) Typically, if you can plant by early to mid April or so, you should have a good chance for blooms the first year.
Mulching around newly planted daylilies will help keep the soil moist and reduce weed competition. Like most perennials, it takes daylilies a year or two to get established and hit their stride.

Daylilies can be planted anytime from spring through fall. In the deep South, early spring or very late fall are the most desirable planting times. New plants should be soaked for a few hours or overnight in water or in a weak solution of liquid fertilizer.
Daylilies are strong performers in the garden.
If you deadhead them (cut off the old flower stalks at the base) you will get even more blossoms than if you leave the stalks up to form seed pods which over the summer will ripen and burst in the fall. While it isn't necessary, doing it will get you better performance.
The classic orange daylily is actually considered a weed in some states. This orange flowered weed can take over plenty of space in no time at all. They will be battling your other plants for resources that they will not be able to spare. You could see them outright killing other plants in your garden as they spread.

Hardy, pest-resistant, and quick to multiply, Daylilies are ideal perennials with many landscape uses: as specimen plants in the garden or massed to stabilize a slope or to act as a carefree ground cover.
Spacing: Daylilies will eventually expand to form large clumps up to three feet in diameter. So, by spacing your new plants two feet or more apart initially, you can avoid having to dig and move them as they grow in. However, if you want added impact in the early years, space your new plants about 18” apart.
Daylilies need to be watered daily for the first week or two after being planted. Daylilies need to be watered once or twice a week for the remainder of the first growing season. Routine watering, in the beginning, will help the plant settle in. Established Daylilies generally do not need to be watered.
Daylily division should be tackled every three to five years for optimum health. If you never divide them, the plants will not grow as vigorously, and you will see fewer and smaller flowers each year. Newer varieties of daylily grow more slowly. You can wait longer between divisions for these.
Many daylily varieties spread easily and are used as colorful groundcover and weed control. Plus, the thick tubers of daylilies form a dense web underground that holds soil in place, even on steep slopes. Their thick, tuberous roots spread out like strong fingers and keep a tight grip on soil in nearly any location.
We typically use a high quality, nitrogen rich fertilizer each spring before the daylilies begin to bloom. Slow release fertilizer, liquid fertilizer, compost or well-rotted manure are all good choices as well. Daylilies love nitrogen so it's important to use a mix that is high in nitrogen.
To avoid root competition for water and nutrients, do not plant Daylilies near shrubs or trees if possible. If you can't avoid it, be sure to give them extra water and fertilizer to make up for what the other plants take.
Epsom Salts for daylilies - Epsom salts can be very effective for daylilies growth. Epsom salts for daylilies can be used as a fertiliser, an insecticide and growth catalyst.
Daylilies grow well in any reasonably fertile garden soil. However, a little extra fertilizer can work wonders. If you fertilize only once a year, do so in early spring as new daylily top growth emerges.
Overwatering over a prolonged period may also lead to diseases such as root rot, mold, and mildew, all of which can kill your plant. Underwatering is far less common for the Yellow daylily, as this plant has decent drought tolerance.
