Always cut in first then continue painting with a roller. Cut in and paint with a roller one wall at a time. If you cut in all areas first and then roll the entire room, the paint that was applied when cutting in will have dried quicker and you will be left with a patchy, uneven finish.
While it does take some setting up, painter's tape is the most effective way for painters to create straight lines. Whether cutting in or making an isolated line, painter's tape can create a straight line on almost any surface.
Using too much or too little paint will result in an uneven finish and can add unwanted texture to your paint job. If you load the roller or brush too much, it can cause drips and sags. It also extends dry time. Using too little affects the texture because you have to paint more coats than necessary.
If you're new to painting a room, having a ceiling painting pad tool will help you paint a perfect line easily. When you place the pad along the top of the wall so the wheels roll on the ceiling, you'll be able to paint a perfect line. I often use the pad to paint the area right under the ceiling, too.
To achieve a smooth finish without brush marks or roller lines and stipple, we recommend the “roll and back tip” technique. This method ensures an even coat without leaving behind visible brush or roller marks. First, load your roller with paint and apply it in a long even stroke along a section of trim or door.
Be aware of paint ridges creating gaps under the tape.
Black, blue, and green: Darker shades like navy blue and hunter green feature intense pigments that can resist coverage, particularly by lighter colors. (If you've ever tried adding white paint over dark paint, you know how many coats you need for a solid finish!)
Key Points
Anything that needs to move like door hinges or locks, paint just gums them up. Radiators without the right paint can end up peeling. Tiles without proper prep and primer rarely last. Kitchen worktops are another one unless you're using the right system.
Keep a wet edge: Don't let one section dry before rolling the next. Roll in full, even strokes: Start at the top and roll down in overlapping “W” or “M” motions. Maintain consistent pressure: Avoid pressing too hard. Back-roll lightly: After applying paint, make a light pass over the area without reloading your roller.
What Causes Brush and Roller Marks? Application of additional paint, or re-brushing or re-rolling, in areas where the paint has partially dried. "Working" paint too much during application (e.g., applying too quickly or for too long). Use of the wrong type or nap size of roller cover.
If the surface isn't smooth to start with, you can use a sanding pad to remove any unsightly lumps and bumps or texture. You can also sand lightly after painting to smooth out any brush marks before waxing.
Some people will use a 4-inch mini roller to more efficiently paint flat baseboards, and this is the only baseboard style that a roller would be useful with. Even if you go this route you are still going to need a paint brush to get in the corners, and a brush is always going to give you sharper lines than a roller.
Painting the Edges
There are several methods that professional painters use to achieve clean lines and a polished finish. Cut-In Method: This method involves using an angled brush to paint close to the edge, creating a straight line. Start by dipping the brush into the paint and then tapping off any excess.
