A small, single-pane window only needs a 3/16” thickness, but as the size of the window increases, the thickness increases. Glass walls and partitions are often 3/8” or ½” in thickness, in order to prevent damage from the weather and other impacts that the window will endure.

However, a common range for the thickness of glass walls is between 0.8cm to 1.2cm. Glass walls with a thickness of 0.8cm are often used for smaller partitions or dividers within office spaces where sound insulation may not be a primary concern.
How Thick Can Structural Glass Walls be? As a rough guide, thicknesses can range from 6mm to 24mm. Under compression, 1cm cube of a typical structural glass can withstand up to 10 tone loads before breaking. However, the thickness is determined by the role required of the glass.
For commercial construction, the two most common thicknesses are 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) monolithic and 1 inch (25 mm) insulating glass.

Recognised for its strength and safety, toughened glass typically ranges from 10mm to 12mm for office partitions.
In commercial projects, the monolithic glass is typically ¼ inch or 6.4 millimetres. The insulating glass is usually one inch or 25 millimetres. In residential projects, the monolithic glass is typically ⅛ inch or 3.2 millimetres and the insulating glass is ⅝ inch or 16 millimetres.

Window walls are built one floor at a time and are supported by the slabs above and below them. In other words, window walls are built within the slab edge. Curtain walls are structurally independent and don't require support on every floor. They tend to span multiple stories and are built outside the slab edge.
4mm glass is probably tempered, and it's a lot stronger than regular 2mm. A non tempered 4mm glass is dangerous in case of breakage, it becomes a weapon.
Understanding the thickness of commercial glass
When we talk about the standard thickness of commercial glass, there's quite a range. It starts as thin as 1/8 inch (3 mm)and can reach up to 3/4 inch (19 mm) or more when the glass needs to bear more weight or withstand higher wind pressures.
The thickness of the fire rated glass panel will depend on the size of the glass unit and the fire rating which it is required to have. 30/30 fire-rated glass with a thickness of 17mm-30mm. 60/60 fire rated glass partitions can be 25-41mm thick with a 90mm fire rated glass unit being up to 70mm thick.
Residential Standards: Most residential windows use glass thicknesses ranging from 2.5mm to 4mm. Commercial Standards: Commercial buildings often require thicker glass, ranging from 6mm to 12mm, to meet safety and durability requirements.
5mm: Slightly thicker than 4mm, 5mm toughened glass offers increased strength and stability, making it suitable for small windows, shelves, and tabletops.
Glass Thickness: Glass mirrors typically come in 1/4-, 1/8- or 3/16-inch thickness. For home décor, we recommend 1/4-inch-thick glass. Mirror Silvering: A good mirror should have a thick, high-quality coating of silvering — the silver-nitrate-compound coating on one side of the glass that makes it reflective.
Mirrors are typically ¼” thick. 3/8 Inch Glass - Shower doors and exterior furniture often utilize 3/8” glass due to its enhanced strength.
Safety glass & more than 12mm: Facade glass should use safety glass, the thickness of the single glass panel should not be less than 6mm, full glass facade thickness should not be less than 12mm.
Shower enclosure glass comes in four standard thicknesses. Most of the pre-made enclosures are available in these four thicknesses. The standard thickness is 3/16-inch, 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, and ½-inch.
The thickness of glass partition walls used in office partitions — laminated or tempered — typically ranges from as thin as ¼” to as thick as ¾”. Depending on your application, the thickness you need may dictate the glass partition systems that you can choose from, or vice versa.
The standard thickness for a glass curtain wall depending on several factors, such as specific design, structural requirements, and building codes. However, a typical range for the glass thickness in a curtain wall system between 8 mm (5/16 inch) to 16 mm (5/8 inch).
A common rule for displaying curtains properly says the curtains finished width should be at least 2 times the width of your window (if not more) to achieve a look of proper fullness. Example: If your window measures 36" wide (window width x 2 = 72"), you need curtains that will give a minimum width of 72".
No standard wall thickness: The thickness of the partition wall is also fairly flexible, a frame is generally only 75 mm or 100 mm thick. However, you must calculate the entire partition wall space. Make sure to allow enough room for all the additional wiring, insulation, plumbing and plasterboards.
A glass partition wall costs $30 to $90 per square foot or $1,500 to $9,000 total installed. These glass walls are commonly used to separate working spaces in an office and vary in size and height. Mirrored or frosted glass costs more but provides more privacy.
Actual glass block sizes are slightly smaller to allow space for the application of mortar. The Premiere Series block has an actual thickness of 3-7/8″. The actual width and height are undersized by 1/4 “. For example, an 8″ x 8″ x 4” nominal has an actual measurement of 7-3/4” x 7-3/4” x 3-7/8”.
