Modern-day soapmakers often add small amounts of salt to soap to make the soap harden faster for quicker unmoulding. Formulas for so called 'salt bars' call for large quantities of salt; anything from 50% to 100% of the weight of oils is common.
Adding salt to soaps made from potassium hydroxide makes them harder, close in hardness to soaps made from sodium hydroxide. The effect is more noticeable in soaps made from fats that are liquid at room temperature versus fats that are solid at room temperature.
When you add salt to soap recipes, it adds immediate hardness. That happens both when you add salt crystals or salt dissolved in a solution. If the soap was not mixed thoroughly or was not allowed enough time to cure, it may not lather properly. Additionally, hard water can affect soap lathering. Hard water contains minerals that can react with soap and form a scum that prevents it from lathering.

You will want to heat the water so that it is hot enough to dissolve your salt. Once the salt is dissolved, you will want to slowly add the mix to your soap, stirring well with each addition. I like to add mine slowly until I get the consistency of honey.
2 lbs of soap base will yield eight 4-oz bars. (Four bars per pound). If you're not sure how many ounces your mold holds fill up a Pyrex measuring cup with water, looking at the ounce markings and fill your mold.
Allow the soap bars to cool completely at room temperature. 4-6 hours will be enough for the soap in the molds to completely harden, and then it can be removed. Take it out of the molds, and it is ready to use right away.

When making a melt and pour soap, add the coffee grounds after the soap base has had a chance to cool slightly. As the soap base cools, it will get a bit thicker, keeping the grounds from all sinking to the bottom as much as they would in a hotter, runnier soap.
Temperature is important here too - the base soap needs to cool to 125-130° F so it won't melt the small details. When it's ready, spritz with alcohol, slowly pour the soap in, and spritz with alcohol again to pop any bubbles. Let it harden for 4-6 hours or up to overnight.
