In order to determine how many stools will fit at your kitchen island, home experts recommend you allow 28 to 30 inches for each seating space, which means you can divide the length of your island's counter by 30 to to figure out how many stools will comfortably fit.
The typical recommendation is to think about 28-30” per stool! That would mean you'd need a five foot island for two people.
How long should an island be for three stools? An island for three stools could be around 8ft (2.4m) long for luxuriously spacious seating. It is possible go smaller, though, allowing a width of 24in (60cm) per person, which makes for an island length of 6ft (1.8m).
How long should an island be for four stools? At minimum, you'll want an island to be 96″ long to accommodate four stools. For comfort, you should allow at least 24″ of space per stool, and up to 30″.
How many bar stools can you fit at a 6 foot island? If you have a 6ft counter top you can fit 3 average size bar stool. If you have a 6ft Kitchen island you can fit 6 average sized bar stools.
Measure the usable length of the counter top or bar. Divide that by 21" per stool for a small stool and 24" for larger stools with swivels and arms. Some very large stools may require more than 24". Looks like 7 feet will be a bit tight for 4 bar stools, 8 feet would be more comfortable.

The average kitchen island size (according to a variety of experts) is approximately 80 x 40 inches. However, keep in mind that this is not a law! It's just a guide to help you with the layout of your kitchen. Every home is different.
The first step in planning your kitchen island is determining the size. The minimum recommended size of an island is 2-by-4 feet. However, the island's total area should be at most 10% of the kitchen area. For example, if the kitchen is 150 square feet, the island should be at most 15 square feet.
The height of an island usually matches the height of a countertop at 36 inches. If your island has seating, the counter should overhang at least 15 inches. An island with a taller height for bar stool seating should be 42 inches high and the overhang should be at least 12 inches.
A typical overhang for a comfortable seating area should be around 25-30cm (10-12”), this should leave enough knee room and adequate space between the countertop edge and the person seated. Therefore, as the depth of the overhang increases, so does the comfort and usability of the bar.
Thirty-six inches is a recommended standard height for a kitchen island. Seating at a 36-inch-high island is somewhere between a typical kitchen table seat and typical bar stools. Some professionals recommend 42 inches for an island that will be used mainly for seating and eating.
Kitchen islands, bar counters and pub tables are great for quick dining, serving drinks to guests or creating a homework-and-everything-else workspace. They are typically 40″–42″ high, requiring higher seating. Bar stools rise to the occasion and tend to be 30″-ish tall at the seat to rise to the higher table design.
Kitchen Bar Stool Width
The average seat width is about 42cm (16.5 inches) and if you take stools that have arms or padding, then the width could extend to 55cm (21.6 inches). For optimal comfort, try to leave a 15cm (6 inches) space between each stool.
The NKBA guidelines recommend that each seat be 24 inches wide. But the depth, or knee space, required varies with countertop height. For a 30-inch-high island, knee depth should be 18 inches; for a 36-inch height, it should be 15 inches; and it should be 12 inches for a 42-inch-high island.
The general rule is that you will need at least 42 to 48 inches (106.68 cm to 121.92 cm) of open space around your island. Another life-saving guideline: if your kitchen is less than 13 feet wide, we don't recommend adding an island at all.
At minimum, an island should be 4 feet long and a little more than 2 feet deep, but it must also have room for people to move and work around it. Unless your kitchen is at least 8 feet deep and more than 12 feet long, don't even think about an island.
'You should plan on 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60cm) for each person along an island,' says Jeremy Boulanger. 'So a 4 foot (1.2m) island would sit two people comfortably, etc. ' Bear in mind that if kids will generally be seated at the island, a width at the smaller end of the range should be just fine.
THE PERFECT PLACEMENT
Next, measure the width of your counter or bar to determine how many stools you'll need. You'll want to leave enough room between each bar stool so you can sit comfortably without feeling crowded and get up with ease. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 6 inches between each stool.
First, you need to consider the size of your kitchen island. A standard kitchen island is about 36 inches high, 24-30 inches deep, and 48-72 inches wide. If you have a smaller kitchen island, you may only be able to fit two or three bar stools comfortably. If you have a larger island, you can usually fit more stools.
As a rule, if your island or peninsula countertop is the same height as the rest of your countertops, you'll want to go with a counter height stool. If you have a raised countertop that's higher than everything else, you'll want to go with a bar height stool.
This is approximately 6” higher than the standard 35″-40″ kitchen counter height typically used throughout the rest of the kitchen design. This kitchen seating design works well with bar stools that are 29″-30″ tall.
The average bar height is 42 inches tall. You want to keep your bar between 36-42 inches or else your barstools won't fit under comfortably.
