Tiles are commonly referred to by their "nominal" sizes which might not be the "true" measurement of the material. An example of this is when a 12" x 12" porcelain tile has a "true" measurement of 11-7/8" x 11-7/8".
How many tiles are in a box? This will vary depending on the size of the tile. But typically you get anywhere between 6 and 48 tiles in a box. But it's not how many tiles are in a box that is important but the coverage.

What are the dimensions of subway tile? Subway tile is traditionally 3 x 6 inches and this is the most popular size of subway tile. However, any rectangular tile with 1-to-2 dimensions can work as subway tile, with other subway tile sizes including 2 x 4, 4 x 8, and 6 x 12.
This is simply the square footage of the space divided by the area of each tile. For example, if the square footage of the space is 120 square feet and each tile is 12 inches by 12 inches, the calculation would be 120 square feet / (12 inches x 12 inches) = 120 square feet / 144 square inches = 0.83 tiles.

Calculate the total square footage of the room by dividing it by the total floor space of the tile in the box. For example: If each tile is 1 square foot, you will need 120 tiles to conceal a 120 square foot area. You will need to purchase 12 boxes of tiles if each box contains 10 tiles.
How many square feet is a 12×12 tile? For clarification, (1) 12×12 tile covers 1 square foot. And the term “12×12” actually refers to the length and width of the tile in inches.

Most boxes contain 10 square feet of tile, but this can vary. Divide the area of your room by the square footage provided by each box to calculate how many boxes you need. If you get a decimal, round up to the next number.
For floor tiles ranging in size between 8" and 12", you may want to use a ¼" x ⅜," and for floor tiles 12" wide and larger, go with a ½."
