How long should I leave my item or fabric in the dyebath? It really depends on the desired shade and fabric. To achieve the color on the box or bottle, we suggest 30 to 60 minutes with continuous stirring. For lighter shades, we suggest 10 to 20 minutes.

Can you leave Rit dye on too long?

Will Rit dye rub off?

We do not recommend using Rit to dye upholstered fabric because after the dye is applied, the excess dye must be removed. This can be difficult to achieve with furniture and if the excess dye is not completely removed, it can rub off on clothing.

Will Rit dye stain my washing machine?

Nonetheless, we can promise you Rit won't permanently stain any metal component on your machine. Rit has been used in washing machines for decades, dating back to the time when the electric washing machine was invented in the 1950s.

Can you thicken Rit dye?

Add food thickener following directions on package and shake well. Allow dye to sit and thicken for 30 minutes. Pour half of the thickened dye solution into squeeze bottle and leave remaining in the jar.
