Our bodies tell us when we have had enough water, and we then stop drinking. Just like animals, plants can die from taking in too much water. But unlike animals, plants do not get to choose when they get water! Water falls on the soil by a plant, and the plant's roots absorb the water.
This is a little more than 1 tablespoon per day. Water use was not constant during the study; small plants used 1 tablespoon per day, while large plants used slightly less than 2 tablespoons per day. Overall, there was a good correlation between plant growth and the amount of water applied.
Most plants require the soil to drain regardless if it is new or established. Some common signs of overwatering are leaves turning yellow or brown and lesions that turned dark colors. Root rot is caused when the soil remains wet for too long of a period and does not dry out.

The best way to tell if your plants need water is to stick your finger about an inch into the potting mix—if it feels dry, break out the watering can. If you detect dampness, check back again in a day or two. For smaller houseplants, you can also pick up the whole container. If it feels light for its size, add water.
Your favorite brew is loaded with beneficial bacteria yeast, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Plants need all these elements to thrive. Yes, you can pour the last bit of stale beer into your plant, but if you don't want your house to smell like a local craft brewery, dilute it with water.
Signs Your Plant is Dying or Sick
Because they can be quite sensitive to watering, soil acidity, light conditions, humidity, pest infestations and a broad range of factors, they'll tell you when something is bothering them. Keep an eye out for: Yellowing or browning on the leaves. Wilting or drooping leaves.
This depends on the plant types, garden light conditions, and weather. Plants in shaded areas may last longer without water compared to those in full sun. Container and window box plants can dry out in a day, whereas many houseplants can manage with one watering per week or less.
Morning watering is actually preferable to evening watering as the plant has time to dry before the sun goes down. At night, water tends to rest in the soil, around the roots, and on the foliage, which encourages rot, fungal growth, and insects.
It is best to water heavier less often than to water shallowly every day. If you have watered a plant for less than 30 seconds, you are probably guilty of this. Deep-watering encourages root growth. Plants need a thorough soaking if you want lush and vibrant growth.
Provide Slow, Deep Watering
Place the hose at the base of the plant at a heavy trickle. If you are unsure how long to water new plants, aim for 30-60 seconds for small plants – longer for larger plants while moving the hose to a few locations around the plant. Avoid watering when the soil feels moist.
Put your plants in a tub or sink and let them "soak."
Put the pot (with a drainage hole, of course) into a sink or basin, then fill the basin with lukewarm water until the water almost reaches the top of the pot. Let your varieties soak for about 10 minutes to an hour. You might see a few air bubbles, which are normal.
How to check for root rot. The main signs to look out for are: yellowing, wilting leaves, wet soil that isn't drying, black, wet roots, quickly declining health, and stunted growth.
The faster their soil dries out, the better these plants recover. To speed up the process, place a sheet of paper towel under or around the root ball. After a few hours in the shade and in the open air, the soil will be dry. You can then return the plant to its container.
If you have a plant with shallow roots, top watering will be the best way to water the roots. Plants like epiphytes, succulents, Snake plants, Calathea, Aloe, more mature Maranta, Sedums, Kalanchoe, Begonias, African violets, and Pothos have shallow roots.
Usually underwatering a plant is less damaging than overwatering, which can cause additional problems like root rot and other diseases. But of course, if a plant is too dry it can shrivel up before you even realize it.
Simply take a shallow dish or pot and fill it up halfway with water. Then place your plant in the dish. Let the plant sit for 30 minutes to an hour depending on how big the pot is. When the top of the soil is moist you are all done.
