The typical comfort height for the positioning of a floating bathroom vanity unit can be anything between 25-30 inches from the floor, or 635 to 760mm. Usually, vanities positioned on the lower side of this scale will feature a vessel sink, which will generally add on five or six inches atop.
However, if you have a range of heights in your family, choosing an average is best. For example, technically speaking, the optimal vanity height for men is between 34 and 36 inches, and the optimal height for women is between 32 and 34 inches. The average number of 34, then, fits the bill for both men and women.
Wall-mounted, floating vanities are almost always 34” or 36” counter height.
Vanities and Pedestal Sinks
Clearance in front of the vanity: 21" minimum, although 30" is recommended for a total of 51" from the wall.
In nearly all cases, the big answer is yes — you should attach your vanity to the wall. What's more, the vanity should be flush against the wall, with no space between the back and the wall itself. The reason for this is to hide and protect your plumbing.
For a freestanding vanity that reaches the floor, you can attach it to the wall (or floor) using L-brackets concealed inside the cabinet. If you install a floating vanity, you need to. The important thing is to use a stud finder before you get started and to search for studs on the wall.
Wall-mounted, floating vanities are almost always 34” or 36” counter height. The increased height adds to the effect of the “floating” visual moreso than a 32” cabinet.
Make sure the rough-in plumbing protrudes from the wall at approximately 17"-20" from the ground. This will allow the p-trap to have enough clearance to fit without too much fiddling around. Plumbing in at 17-20" from the ground will allow the vanity top to be mounted at 34" from the ground.
If the top is on a free standing vanity (no walls on either side) the top should be 2” LONGER (B) than the vanity to allow for 1” overhang on each side.
Bathroom base cabinets and vanities are typically lower than kitchen countertops because they are designed for tasks done seated or when bending at the waist, such as applying makeup or shaving.
A little extra space goes a long way in the bathroom, especially when two people must use it at the same time. NKBA designers recommend a 30″ clearance between the front edge of a fixture, such as a vanity or toilet, and any other fixture or wall. The building code allows for a minimum of 21″.
Standard spacing for a vanity mirror(s) is 5-10 inches from the vanity sink to the bottom of the mirror. That range of spacing allows for height considerations for who the bathroom is intended for so the mirror can be set eye level for the viewer, as well considering the overall size and shape of the mirror itself.
Place the vanity light bar 3 inches above the mirror for the most even illumination across your reflection. For a child's bathroom, keep the light at the standard height, but choose a wall-hung mirror that can be adjusted. The bathroom mirror height can be increased as they grow.
The drain stub-out extends from a fitting -- usually a sanitary tee -- to a point 3 or 4 inches beyond the wall. If you mean for rough-in construction, we always went 4–6” past the finished wall.
A bathroom vanity is an essential aspect of any bathroom and understanding it's size and dimensions is key to finding the right one for your home. A bathroom vanity has a standard height of 30-36 inches, a depth of 20-21 inches and a wide variety of widths depending on the size of your bathroom.
Generally, flooring contractors prefer that the cabinets go in first so that there is less possibility of the floor getting scratched. Cabinet installers like the floor to be in place so that the cutting and dust from the floor installation will not damage the vanity.
Floating Floor
NO. Never install cabinets on top of floating flooring. Based on seasonal changes in humidity, the flooring material needs to expand and contract. If that can't happen, the weight of the cabinets can cause the flooring to buckle and damage the flooring's locking systems.
More floor space makes a small bathroom appear larger, and an effective way to achieve this is by installing illusion-inducing fixtures like a floating vanity or a pedestal sink. A floating vanity doesn't sit on the ground; it attaches to the wall (so it seems to float in space).
Pro: Easy to clean the space underneath
Since wall mounted vanities are not stuck to the floor, owners have full access to the space beneath. A quick sweep or vacuum and that's it! There are also fewer nooks and crannies for dirt to collect, making maintenance easier than ever.
If a window is available, position the vanity nearby to capitalize on natural light. If you're relying on artificial light, install fixtures on either side of the mirror—this will illuminate your face more effectively than overhead lighting alone.
Easier to Organize and Clean - Unlike having a base or edges from a freestanding bathroom vanity, cleaning and organizing your bathroom will be much easier and more practical.
Generally you'll want to hang your mirror at eye level, approximately 60”-65” from the floor. Position the mirror on the wall where you want to hang it, centering it on the wall or to a piece of furniture beneath it (couch or console table).
Vanity Lighting Fixtures
The most common mistake people make is putting recessed ceiling fixtures directly over the mirror. These cast shadows on the face, making daily grooming rituals more difficult. Vertical fixtures or sconces mounted on either side of the mirror are best for casting an even light across the face.
Typically, it is best if the mirror is centered over the sink. If you have two sinks and are putting up two mirrors, they should each be centered over their respective sink. You'll also want to make sure that you leave enough room on either side of the mirror so it's hanging evenly.
The best locations to install electric outlets in the bathroom are on the wall above the countertop, at a height of about 36 inches from the floor, near the vanity mirror, and away from the shower or bathtub.
