Remove old caulk from seams around sinks and faucets. Repair chips and large cracks (more than 1/8-inch wide) with a two-part epoxy putty. Let the putty dry thoroughly, then sand the putty smooth. Apply painter's tape to everything you don't want to paint, including your sink, faucets and backsplash.
Use a plastic laminate restoration product such as Gel-Gloss to hide surface scratches and restore shine and color. This product is available at most home improvement and hardware stores and should be applied to the counter using a dry cloth.

Clear coats like Minwax Polycrylic are available in several sheens. I chose clear satin; the application marks are less visible than with semi- or high-gloss. It has been six months since my first application of the protective finish, and there have been no problems with peeling or discoloration.
