With the dishwasher empty, pour two cups of plain white vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher. Close it and run it through a ``normal'' cycle. It should then have significantly less mineral build up.
In addition to dirty dishes, you may notice dirty water sitting at the base of the dishwasher after it runs. Not only is this problem a nuisance, it can also lead to mold and bacteria, which can cause additional problems. A foul smell may also be a telltale sign of a clogged dishwasher filter.

Signs you should be cleaning your filter more
Visible build-up of food in the filter. Water not draining properly. Nasty and unpleasant odours.
Many newer dishwashers have a removable filter, but some older ones don't (your appliance manual will tell you either way).
Take 1 cup of lemon juice in a container and place it on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. Next, you should run the dishwasher and watch as the citric acid removes all the calcium buildup. If there is still some deposit, you can use white vinegar as a rinsing agent to lift and remove the remaining deposits.
Many dishwasher filters are composed of two parts: an upper and lower filter assembly. Give the upper filter a quarter turn clockwise and take it out. Then, gently lift and pull the lower filter forward to remove it.
Rinse the filter under running water to remove any food or debris (see below). To get rid of any stuck gunk, use a sponge or scrub brush with warm soapy water—or even a bottle brush or toothbrush if your filter has parts that are hard to get to.
