Causes eye, skin, nose and throat irritation. USE ONLY WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION: Do not breathe vapors or spray mist.
How long does it take for the paint smell to go away? Fresh paint can take as little as 36 hours to up to a week to dissipate depending on the strength of the smell, how much was used, and the size of the room that was painted.
The label of many beauty products features a small jar with a number and the letter M next to it that denotes how long that product will last after you open it. For example, 3M means three months, 6M means six months, 12M means a year, etc.
Some paint contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that turn into a gas at room temperature, endangering your health. As you begin to paint, you release VOCs into the air, causing the tell-tale paint smell.
KILZ® ORIGINAL LOW ODOR is an interior oil-based sealer, adhesion promoter and stain blocker with less odor than typical oil-based primers. It also features fast odor dissipation technology which means no lingering odor†.
Sealing Odors: For persistent odors, apply a second coat of primer before topcoating. If odor continues, a longer drytime is needed before topcoating. Tinting: KILZ RESTORATION Primer may be tinted with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting to a lighter shade than the topcoat is recommended.
Dry Time @ 77°F (25°C) / 50% RH: Touch in 30 minutes. Paint in 1 hour.
Use Acids Like Lemon & Vinegar
There are several ways to use lemons and white vinegar to fight paint fumes: Mix up lemon water and spray all over the painted room. Put lemon slices or vinegar in a few bowls and spread them all over the space. Simmer a pot of lemon water to quickly fill the whole house.
Repeated or prolonged inhalation may cause toxic effects. Signs/Symptoms: Overexposure can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Prior to applying the primer, remove any mold or mildew with a proper remover or have it removed by a professional. In severe cases, the moldy substrates may need to be replaced. Once the surface is mold and mildew free, ensure it is clean and dry before applying primer.
We do not recommend using Kilz Restoration Primer on floors. We only recommend using the primer on subfloors and installing carpet or hardwood floors over the primer (after one hour or more). Please reach out to us directly if you have additional questions. Have a great day!
The Issues With Traditional Primers and Coatings:
When these coatings are applied, harmful fumes are released into the air, leading to indoor air pollution and potential respiratory issues.
Any time there's a high chemical release in your house, such as from painting, construction, or gluing, the first line of attack is to let the space air out. Ventilate the contaminated air out of your house. After a fresh paint, it may take a couple of days for the VOC off-gassing to diminish.
KILZ Restoration® is a new generation water-based primer, sealer and stain blocker that offers the performance of traditional oil and shellac-based primers. It tackles tough stains and seals persistent pet, food and smoke odors. It can also be used to block odors from subfloor when replacing carpet or wood flooring.

Sanding, grinding, or abrading may release sanding dust, which may be harmful if inhaled and has been shown to cause lung damage or cancer with long-term exposure.
KILZ MOLD & MILDEW Primer will block most medium to heavy stains including felt marker, grease, ink, pencil, tannin and water stains. It is a fast drying, low odor, very low VOC formula and is easy to clean with soap and water. Not recommended for floors.
Original Kilz Primer allowed more seep through when put in two coats to two different walls in the same area, whereas Zinsser provided superior coverage.
KILZ Restoration is a water-based primer which also blocks severe stains and odors, however, has lower VOC's which meets all national regulations. It is also a low odor primer and has easy clean-up with soap and water.
Ventilation is the most effective way to quickly get rid of strong paint smells. Open windows and doors, use fans, and install an air purifier to help circulate the air and remove odours. Open windows and doors: Opening a window or door will allow fresh air in while allowing any VOCs from the paint to escape outside.
Although opened paint can last up to around two years (if stored properly), you can usually tell if it has spoiled by looking at the expiration date. If however, it gives off a foul, rancid smell you should probably get rid of it (see further down to dispose of stale paint responsibly).
