Inhaling the dry DE is not good. And if you put it all over you lawn and then it drys and then the bogs go sniffing around, that could be bad news. You could switch to the cellulose fiber instead of DE and not have the problem.
Granted, it sounds too good to be true, but diatomaceous earth can be a safe, effective, nontoxic component of your lawn-pest management plan if you buy a product that's labeled for the pests you're targeting, use it exactly according to the package label, and take the proper precautions during preparation and ...
I think the DE will get worked into the soil by the time you get the mower out. I am surprised however that it isn't killing your grass. It began to kill mine, which is why I went to a cartridge setup. During a backwash, the DE is well concentrated with the water, so again I wouldn't sweat the airborne issue.
* Can i discharge the backwash water onto my lawn, will it harm the grass / plants? The DE doesn't harm the grass or plants, excessive chlorine or saltwater may. Alternatively you could backwash to a sewer outlet or clean-out.
After backwashing, new DE must be added to the filter. Add the entire amount of DE the filter recommends. If you see DE returning to the pool, vacuum it to waste, after it settles. The next time you backwash and recoat, decrease the amount by 1 pound.
You should backwash your DE pool filter about once a month during pool season. In addition to the regular schedule, you'll want to perform additional backwashing if: You've been running your pool filter for 48 hours straight. This can cause a pressure build-up, even if the filter grids look clean.
Diatomaceous earth must be reapplied after every rain or heavy dew to be effective. It's important to remember that wet DE does not have the drying, cutting effect that's needed to be work against pests.
“We need a way to injure mosquitoes without using toxic chemicals.” One of the particulates, diatomaceous earth, was found to be particularly effective. Instead of hindering landing mosquitoes, the chalky, ground-up remains of fossilized algae proved to be insecticidal, McCord says.
DE is a Class 1 carcinogen — but only when airborne! Once it has been wetted, it is considered inert.
Dispose of spent diatomaceous earth in the garbage. Diatomaceous earth cannot be discharged to surface waters, storm drainage systems, septic systems or on the ground. If there is not a suitable dirt area, discharge filter material back into the sanitary sewer system using a clean out.
Answer: It is not recommended to swim in the pool when DE is present. It is more dangerous in dry form when it is in the air and breathed in. However, people do swallow water when swimming and swallowing DE is always the danger with it.
What is the best way to apply Diatomaceous Earth by spraying it? There may be more than one way, but we recommend that you mix approximately 1-4 tablespoons of Diatomaceous Earth each gallon of water and then spray it onto the shrubbery, lawn, and anywhere else on the grass area that the pests inhabit.
If you need to apply diatomaceous earth to areas where dry DE won't stick, the wet application method is a great option. Mix the two at a ratio of four tablespoons of DE per gallon of water and apply in a thick coat to tough spots, like the tops and undersides of your plants.
Diatomaceous Earth is perfectly safe when used on dogs, cats, and even humans! Just be sure that you are ONLY using 'food grade' versions of Diatomaceous Earth as the 'filter grade' Diatomaceous Earth can be harmful to your pets.
You can purchase Diatomaceous Earth in a finely ground powder. Diatomaceous Earth has an extreme dehydrating effect. When the bugs come in contact with the powder it adheres to them and won't come off. The powder then dehydrates them and they die.
Diatomaceous Earth
It is completely non-toxic; harmless to humans, birds and other wildlife; and is relatively inexpensive. However, it repels or kills insects that come in contact with it.
Remember, DE will not kill bugs while it's wet, but once it dries out it will retain its bug-killing properties.
To treat your clothes, wash them on the highest possible heat setting, and dry them on the highest heat that's safe for the material. Using rubber gloves – or our applicators – spread diatomaceous earth around the edges of carpets, around your baseboards, and in front of entry doors.
If anything could be considered “normal”, it would be about 10 psi. Most filter systems are designed to operate in the 5-15 or 10-20 psi range. The way to find out your particular correct pool filter pressure is to clean or backwash the filter thoroughly and empty the pump and skimmer baskets.
Grids usually last a long time, up to about 10 years unless they are subjected to extreme conditions for extended periods.
DE Filter Grids Clogged with Oil
Much is brought in on the wind, or dragged in by swimmers. Pool lubricants and some gel type pool clarifiers can add oils to your pool, which eventually is trapped in the filter grids.
If you do not add enough DE to your filter, then the grids are not totally coated with DE and the dirt that goes into your filter will attach itself right to the fabric on the grids and will not backwash off. This will cause your filter to short cycle (go very short times between backwashing).
