Run a drum cleaning program Make sure the drum is empty before you start. And you can add a washing machine cleaner or a bit of washing powder to help things along.
Comment Re: OK to put washing powder into the drum? Thats only if it fills first for a short period to allow the 'eco' ball to lift and seal off the sump. If you tip it into the drum then some of the powder may well sink right into the sump before any water has entered the machine.
Add Vinegar: Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum. Add Baking Soda: Sprinkle about half a cup of baking soda into the drum as well. Run a Hot Cycle: Run an empty wash cycle on the hottest water setting. The vinegar and baking soda will help lift any residue, mineral buildup, and mild rust stains.
Ditch Detergent
Don't use laundry detergent to clean the tub of your washer. Laundry detergent is for laundry and can build up a residue inside the hoses and other components of the washer; and over time it can provide a moist environment for mold and bacteria to grow.
Use the right amount of powder for your machine and load. Place powder directly in the washing machine drum before adding clothes. Use the right temperature setting for your machine and season.
If you want to get rid of limescale in your washing drum, pour some descaler into the detergent dispenser, and start an empty cycle on at least 60 degrees.
Powerful cleaning agents that can be included in powdered detergent formulas, but not liquid forms, work to help remove mud, grass or clay stains. Liquid detergent is best used for grease or oil stains on your day to day items, because of its ability to help release and break down stains in fabrics.
It is important to regularly clean the door and the drum of your washing machine to prevent any build-up of bacterias that can cause bad odours. It is recommended to clean the drum of your washing machine once a month.
Clean the tub thoroughly and rinse everything. Then dry the bath properly with a soft cloth to prevent limescale formation. Do not use aggressive products such as acid, chlorine, ammonia, bleach and abrasives. The latter create fine scratches, which we obviously want to avoid!
What to use: Any high-quality (non-abrasive) furniture/guitar/drum polish/wax should give excellent results on lacquered and covered finishes. Trick Cleaner "wipes" are easy to use and an excellent alternative to spray on cleaners.
Most machines have a “clean” cycle that can be run without a load in it to flush the drum and internal components of excess dirt, bacteria, or any other buildup of contaminants that can lead to dirty or smelly laundry as you run repeated wash cycles through the machine.
For a homemade option, you can try cleaning your washing machine with vinegar. Just pour two cups of distilled vinegar into your detergent drawer. You can also use soda crystals (or baking soda) to clean your washing machine. Sprinkle half a cup into your drum and then let your washing machine run on a hot setting.
Pour a quart of white vinegar into the wash drum with a cup of baking soda. Use a stiff nylon brush and vinegar to scrub the interior of the wash drum. At the hottest temperature setting, run a wash cycle with this cleaning solution in an empty washer; select the heavy-duty wash cycle if available.
The powder detergent goes into the largest section of the drawer, usually on the left-hand side. If in any doubt, check your washing machine's manual. The liquid softener goes into the partially covered section of the drawer with the flower symbol.
Open the door once the cycle is complete to dry out the drum. The Tub Clean cycle typically takes 1 to 2 hours to complete.
Use the 'Drum Clean' cycle every month to prevent bad smells and detergent buildup. This way, bacteria don't get the chance to form. If your washing machine doesn't have this cycle, use the cotton cycle at 90°C. Don't put any laundry in the drum for this cycle and don't use any detergent or fabric softener either.
Add a cup of bleach to the washing machine.
Pour the bleach into the tub of the washing machine and let it sit for an hour before starting the rinse cycle. If you don't want to use bleach you can opt for distilled vinegar instead.
Bacteria builds up inside the drum over time, leading to germs and bad smells. By popping on a drum clean cycle every now and again you can be confident your clothes will come out as squeaky-clean as your machine.
IFB essentials DESCAL acts instantly on stubborn residues, dissolves limescale deposits and drains them out with the wash water. It restores the machine parts affected by limescale to their original condition and leaves the machine drum sparkling clean.
