Yes! Acrylic gesso is technically suitable for priming both oil and acrylic paint. However, we recommend using a solvent-based oil painting primer like Maimeri Oil Primer. Oil paint doesn't adhere to gesso well and it will affect the longevity of your painting.
So while you could skip gessoing the raw canvas for an acrylic painting if you're okay with the paint getting absorbed, you would absolutely have to gesso it for an oil painting to preserve the painting and extend its life. But if you are using a pre-primed canvas for an oil painting, you needn't gesso it again.

Artists have been using canvas for more than 300 years, so it comes highly recommended. The weave of the cloth, combined with the spring of the stretched material, makes it excellent for oil painting. Canvas is often made from linen or cotton.

There are a number of modern materials that could be considered to make an updated gesso recipe, including PVA glue, carboxymethyl cellulose (Tycel is a name you might look for), hydroxipropyl cellulose (Klucel) and casein is an option; there are even some acrylic emulsions that are suitable.
Wood panels do not need to be sealed from oil for longevity but priming will give a better surface to paint on, by making it less absorbent and evening out the absorbency of the wood which would otherwise have different amounts of absorbance between the grain lines and the wood between them.
