Cladosporium: This mold type can appear as black or green spots and is commonly found on fabrics, making your shower curtain a potential target.
Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum, produces spores that release toxins (mycotoxins) into the air. For adults, prolonged exposure can trigger anything from mild irritations to severe health problems, especially for those with compromised immune systems, allergies, or respiratory issues.

Aureobasidium
This yeast-type fungus can be mistaken for another more sinister and dangerous mold but is far less likely to make you sick. Aureobasidium can start as a slimy pink color, but it will turn brown or black and can look like black mold.

"If you allow mold to grow uncontrolled, it can become embedded in the curtain, which makes it impossible to eradicate." Consider purchasing a liner to help prolong the life of your shower curtain. Replace it every six to 12 months, and do the same for curtains you can't wash.
“It's very important to regularly change out your shower curtain, especially if you suffer from a chronic illness or autoimmune condition.” Carson points to guidance from the Cleveland Clinic, which also recommends replacing your shower curtain liner every six months to a year.
